Thoughts From The Media: Calgary Flames – Carolina Hurricanes Trade
Thoughts from the GMs and media on the Calgary Flames - Carolina Hurricanes blockbuster trade today.

A collection of tweets from the media after the Calgary Flames and Carolina Hurricanes completed their blockbuster trade. Tweets contain their thoughts on the trade and some quotes from the teams.

The Hurricanes sent Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin to the Flames for Dougie Hamilton, Micheal Ferland, and Adam Fox.

Kristen Anderson: GM Brad Treliving on players involved in the trade.

Micheal Ferland — “Michael is a warrior and has one year left on his contract and will be a UFA. That always comes into consideration.”

Adam Fox — “Adam Fox is a terrific prospect. The reality was, and I’m not going to get into it, there was a question of whether or not we could sign him or whether he would sign with us.” And Dougie Hamilton — “Dougie is a terrific player. We wish them all the best.”

Pat Steinberg: GM Brad Treliving on Dougie Hamilton after trade. He was asked about speculated locker room issues, and if he had requested a trade.

“Dougie is a terrific player. The one thing I would say is: we take everything into consideration, both on and off the ice. I think I try to have a real open dialogue and relationship with our players. Because of that I don’t share a lot of things that players share with me. I’m going to keep all of that stuff internal. But, needless to say, he’s a terrific player and we’re excited Noah is excited to be in Calgary. At the end of the day, with all of the information involved, we thought it just made a whole lot of sense. Dougie is still a young guy, right shot defenseman who’s got lots of ability. They don’t grow on trees we certainly felt this was a deal that made sense for us.”

Craig Custance: “Brad Treliving said he’s already had initial conversations with Lindholm and Hanifin’s reps on contract talks and doesn’t see that being an issue. Both players are RFAs.”

Chris Nichols: Hurricanes GM Don Waddell: “I think Brad and I started talking about this three, four weeks ago, to be honest.”

Eric Francis: “Bill Peters says Lindholm is penciled in on the top line w Gaudreau and Monahan already and will take draws on his strong side. Said he spoke to him but kept it short as Lindholm was attending Sweden’s World Cup game when the call came.”

Joey Kenward: “Spoke with GM Don Waddell on trade with . Said talks with CGY had been steady for 3 weeks. Feels D.Hamilton & Ferland bring more size/scoring to smaller roster. Not easy to move Hanafin & Lindholm, but moves required after missing playoffs 9 straight years.”

Luke DeCock: “Hanifin and Lindholm for Hamilton, Ferland and Fox (Harvard D prospect) is the deal. RFAs Hanifin and Lindholm both rejected contract offers and were traded within 48 hours.”

Pierre LeBrun: “Calgary and Carolina have had these discussions, on and off, for a few weeks. The Flames from the get-go were always trying to get both Hanifin and Lindholm.”

Bob McKenzie: “Lindholm and Hanifin are both RFA but don’t anticipate any issues signing them. CGY views Lindholm more as a winger than a C but he can play both. Will play in top six and could play alongside Monahan and Gaudreau.”

Chip Alexander: “Tom Dundon said he was going to shake things up. Things are shaking.”

Chip Alexander: “One thing Tom Dundon made clear from beginning on players: it would be “you’re either with us or you’re not.” No gray area. He wanted players 100 percent committed to the Canes franchise and to winning.”

Derek Wills: “Former , current head coach Bill Peters knows these players and their potential better than anybody.”

John Shannon: “More on Hanifin. Allows Flames to re- united TJ Brodie with Giordano. Team believes that Hanifin will blossom playing with Travis Hamonic.”

Anthony Petrielli: “Second team that Dougie Hamilton has played really for and yet they have gotten rid of him – What’s the deal with this guy? On ice he’s amazing and he’s only 25.”

Cory Lavalette: “That is a big-time deal for Carolina. Hamilton > Hanifin. Lindholm certainly more talented than Ferland, but they’re different players. Similar production last year though. Plus they get Fox.”

Dean Molberg: “I’m not sure about the deal, but I get the rationale. Ferland inconsistent and a year from UFA. Team felt Fox wouldn’t sign. Hamilton great player but room needed change. Haven’t watched Lindholm or Hanifin a ton. High ceiling for Hanifin, and Lindholm more well rounded.”

James Mirtle: “The talk Calgary might trade Hamilton seemed to start when he got there… Key to deal may well end up being Fox, who is a real high end D prospect.”

Jonathan Willis: “First thought on the CGY/CAR deal: the Hurricanes must be pretty confident that they’ll be able to move Faulk, because they have a ton of RD now.”

Jonathan Willis: “Second thought: I like Hamilton a ton, obviously, but Fox hasgreat numbers in college and everyone knows what Ferland did last year. I like both Hanifin and Lindholm, but probably a little less than most people. I want to think on this but my initial view is CAR did really well.”

Chris Peters: “Assuming Carolina can get Fox to sign — not a sure thing as he’s at Harvard and could stick around for the full four years — he would eventually add an element they don’t presently have on their blue line. High, high-end offensive defenseman.”

Joe Yerdon: “Adam Fox was dynamite at WJC. Pretty nice pick-up for Carolina in that mo”nster deal with Calgary.

Brian Costello: “If Lindholm doesn’t develop into more than a 40-50 point middle-six forward, it’s a lousy deal for Cgy.”

Rob Vollman: “Dougie Hamiltion is a brilliant addition for Carolina. Over the past 4 seasons, he ranks 8th among D with 121 even-strength points. His Corsi ranks fourth, at +897 He turned 25 six days ago, and is signed for 3 more years at $5.75M/yr.”
