Quick Hits: Hurricanes, Rangers, Maple Leafs, and more
The Penguins re-signed Daniel Sprong, and the Hurricanes re-signed Phil Di Giuseppe
New York Rangers sign a little depth

Rangers NHL.com:  Phil Di Giuseppe signed a two-way one-year deal with the New York Rangers worth $700,000. The contract is $125,000 if he ends up in the minors. The deal involves a minimum salary of $175,000. He carries his arbitration rights into next season which is good news for the 25-year old.

Larry BrooksJacob Trouba may wind up with a contract before arbitration but he may not again. If that is the case, the arbitrator sets up another deal for the defenseman and that could be risky. Trouba may receive a substantial arbitration award then turn that into an eight-year deal. Currently, the Rangers and Trouba’s agent believed to be working on a deal with an AAV of $7.5-$7.8 million for seven years.

Carolina inks three players to minor league deals

Nicholas Niedzielski:  The Charlotte Checkers signed three players to minor-league deals including one that was a former first-round pick. Hunter Shinkaruk grabs the headlines as he was selected 24th by the Vancouver Canucks in 2013. However, his career has fallen sharply since 2016. He had 10 points in 54 games with Laval (Montreal’s AHL affiliate).

Shinkaruk averaged over a point a game in the WHL but never got going NHL wise — just playing 15 games between Calgary and Vancouver. Also, Derek Sheppard and Colin Markison were signed to AHL deals as well.

Michael Kapla surfaces in Toronto, Ryan Johnston also signed

Marlies.ca:  Toronto signs two players to minor league deals — including Michael Kapla. Kapla bounced from the New Jersey organization to the Minnesota organization last season. His split season produced 24 points in 66 games (2 goals, 22 assists). The 24-year old still has a little time to develop into at least a solid AHL defenseman.

Also, the Marlies inked Ryan Johnston to a contract. Johnston scored 22 points in 50 games with Mora IK (SHL) last year. The forward played ten games for the Montreal Canadiens a few years back.
