NHL Trade: The Edmonton Oilers Trade Ryan Strome To The New York Rangers For Ryan Spooner
The Edmonton Oilers have traded forward Ryan Strome to the New York Rangers for Ryan Spooner.

The Edmonton Oilers have traded forward Ryan Strome to the New York Rangers for Ryan Spooner.

The Rangers are retaining $900,000 of Spooner’s salary – this year and next.

The 25-year old Strome was drafted 5th overall in the 2011 draft by the New York Islanders. He carries a $3.1 million salary cap hit.

The 26-year old Spooner was drafted 45th overall in the 2010 draft by the Boston Bruins.

Thoughts from the media

Jason Gregor: “Rangers retain $900K…so this is a pure hockey trade. Each team cap hit remains basically the same. Neither player was off to a good start. Spooner had 41 pts in 59 games last year. Had 39 and 49 the previous two years. Strome had 34,30 and 28 points last three seasons.”

Jack Michaels: “Both players 1-1-2 this season (Spooner in 16gm w/NYR, Strome in 18 gm)…Spooner (like Strome) has played RW as well as centre, although he’s a left shot. Spooner owns a higher career points per game average (.55 to .45).”

Adam Gretz: “Change of scenery trade but unless there is salary moving somewhere the Oilers actually take on *more* salary cap space next season.”

Jonathan Willis: “I don’t have a strong impression on Spooner yet – clearly he can score, it’s too bad he’s a lefty, and the shot metrics are all over the map – so I’m not calling the trade one way or other. But I do think it’ll be a good move for Strome, at the very least.”

Shawn Simpson: “Chiarelli knows Spooner very well from his Boston days. Rangers must have seen something in Strome when on the Island. Spooner gets a chance to play behind McDavid?”

Daniel Nugent-Bowman: “The Strome-Spooner trade seems like a good change-of-scenery deal. They have almost identical production this season. Both have two years left on contracts. Important for Oilers that Rangers are retaining $900,000 annually to cover the difference in salaries”
