The San Jose Sharks trade Mike Hoffman to the Florida Panthers

The San Jose Sharks have traded Mike Hoffman and a 2018 7th round pick to the Florida Panthers for a 2019 2nd round pick, 2018 4th round pick (via Vegas) and 2018 5th round pick.

Florida Panthers: Panthers GM Dale Tallon after acquiring Hoffman.

“Mike is a skilled, consistent and hard-working player who has proven himself to be a talented goal scorer in the NHL,” said Tallon. “His speed, experience and offensive abilities will bolster our top-six group.”

Stephen Whyno: Sharks GM Doug Wilson: “These transactions have also allowed us to add to our pool of draft selections, as well as free up a substantial amount of cap space for internal and external player options in the coming months.”

Jameson Olive: “Tallon said the wanted players, just wanted picks.”

Thoughts from the media

Jameson Olive: “The send a 2019 second round pick, 2018 fourth round pick (via Vegas) and 2018 5th round pick to the for Hoffman. The Cats just picked up a guy you can pencil in for 20 goals and 50 points without parting with a roster player, prospect or first-round pick.”

Jason Gregor: “Essentially Doug Wilson dumped Boedker’s salary $4m (2years), a 6th and 7th pick and Julius Bergman for a 2019 2nd rounder, a 4th and 5th in 2018, a 5th in 2020 and Cody Donaghy. Wilson freeing up cap space to sign Tavares and Kovalchuk?”

Jameson Olive: “Hoffman has 21 power-play goals over the last 2 seasons. That’s a huge boost for the special teams.”

Frank Seravalli: “Pierre Dorion is a big believer in not trading players within his own division. Often says he rarely talks shop with other GMs in the division. Interesting play by .”

Matthews DeFranks: “Hoffman obviously adds to Florida’s top-six, but comes with potential baggage with his girlfriend and the Karlssons revealed last week.”

Adam Gretz: “I like San Jose’s return for Mike Hoffman more than Ottawa’s return for Mike Hoffman because Florida didn’t have to take on Mikkel Boedker’s contract.”

Todd Cordell: “So basically the Sharks cap dumped Boedker in exchange for a 2nd, 4th, and 5th.”

Draglikepull: “Doug Wilson just turned Mikkel Boedker into a bunch of draft picks. That’s some slick GMing.”

Jeff Veillette: “Also, from San Jose’s side, this might literally be one of the smartest trade sequences I’ve ever seen. Dump a bad contract on one team and get assets from another? I don’t know why they had to be involved but they reaped literally all the rewards here.”

Dimitri Filipovic: “Can’t blame the Senators, Hoffman’s value dropped so much that this was the best they could expect to get” “
