The 22-year old Schmaltz was drafted 20th overall in the 2014 draft by the Blackhawks.

Thoughts from the media

Bob McKenzie: “CHI is banking on a few things in this trade with ARI: 1. Strome will be able to play 2nd line centre behind Toews. 2. Strome and DeBrincat may be able to re-create OHL chemistry in NHL. 3. Improved depth, getting two skilled forwards (Strome and Perlini) for one (Schmaltz).”

Bob McKenzie: “CHI likes that Strome has emerged as a top faceoff centre and believes his skill/smarts will be able to compensate for lack of pop in his skating stride.”

Mark Lazerus: “Not too long ago, Nick Schmaltz was the anointed No. 1 center of the future for the Blackhawks, who were squirreling away cap space in order to give him a big contract extension. Now he’s a Coyote, along with Hjalmarsson, Hinostroza, Panik, Raanta, Oesterle, Hossa and Bolland.”

Richard Morin: “Dylan Strome is obviously the key to this deal. He has the ability to be great. Superb playmaking potential, but often shows a lack of effort, discipline and engagement. Loses puck battles, misses assignments, etc. Still, he could be a great player if he ever figures it out.”

Richard Morin: “Brendan Perlini has an unreal shot and has speed to burn. But he doesn’t always show it and often falls into the same pitfalls as Strome with his lack of engagement and unwillingness to play defense. Has the ceiling of a 30-goal scorer, but he plays his own game out there.”

Jeff Marek: “Strome reunited with junior teammate with the Erie Otters Alex DeBrincat. Had huge success together.”

Chris Boden: “Once McDavid left Erie before `16-17, Dylan Strome joined Alex DeBrincat & had 22 goals & 75 pts in 35 gms (Alex “;only” had 65-62/127 in 73gms)”

John Matisz: “In all seriousness, I like this trade a lot for CHI. They take on higher risk (will Strome pan out?) but might get best player in the deal when it’s all said and done, plus Brendan Perlini.”

Chris Peters: “The Dylan Strome Era ends in Arizona before it ever really got going. The former No. 3 pick has underwhelmed at the NHL level, but I’m still not ready to give up on him being a decent pro. Probably never attains slot value, especially given depth of 2015 class. Fresh start?”

Chris Peters: “Went in further detail about re-adjusting expectations for Strome at the start of the season for E+. Problem now is he goes from one challenging situation to try and develop in to another. Will be interesting to track Schmaltz v. Strome down line.”

Scott Wheeler: “I like Nick Schmaltz. He’s a good, young, second-line player. But if I’m in Chicago’s position, I make that trade 10/10 times. Dylan Strome is good, people. Watch what he does with more than 13 minutes of ice-time.”

AJ Haefele: “I love that deal for Chicago, even if it ultimately doesn’t work out. They’re stuck in a position of being just a bit too good to restart and have franchise icons weighing down their cap to keep from getting much better. They have to take big chances. Strome counts.”

AJ Haefele: “As much as I like Chicago taking a big swing, there’s a really good chance this trade ends up being Wolski for Mueller all over again. Lots of pedigree, not very much impact.”

Mark Scheig: “Real talk: The knock on Dylan Strome has always been his skating. But he’s crafty and smart enough that given the right opportunity, he’ll do well. He’s never going to be an elite skater, but he doesn’t have to be.”

Brennan Klak: “That trade is very high risk/high reward for . Nick Schmaltz is much more of a proven commodity than Strome or Perlini, but arguably Strome has the highest upside of the three. I like the move for more THIS season, but it’s definitely a wait-and-see.”
