First tough decision for the Winnipeg Jets is out of the way

Pierre LeBrun: Both the Winnipeg Jets and Tyler Myers have kept the door open for a return ahead of the Jacob Trouba trade.

Frank Seravalli: The Jets were testing the market on the return for Trouba trades that included Mathieu Perreault‘s contract. They went with the trade that gave them a first-round pick.

@Account4hockey: Elliotte Friedman on the radio before the Trouba trade said that there were a lot of teams talking to the Jets but the asking price was high.

After the trade Friedman said on the radio that multiple teams told him that their offer was better than what the Rangers gave up.

Mike McIntrye: Winnipeg Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff on Trouba being the first of may tough decisions that they are going to have to make this offseason.

“We’ve still got lots of moving parts or balls in the air, so to speak….there’s no question we have a challenging summer still ahead of us.”

Mike McIntrye: Cheveldayoff on trades: “We’d love to keep everybody and love to have enough cap space to sign everybody to the extensions they deserve and we’d love to take another swing with the group that we have here. But there’s realities in a hard cap world.”

The Calgary Flames and their RFAs

Eric Francis of Sportsnet: Cost certainty is becoming harder for teams to figure out. The Calgary Flames have $14.5 million in cap space but have to re-sign Matthew Tkachuk. Flames GM Brad Treliving.

“People have got to take care of that piece. Until you have some certainty there it’s hard to chase a bunch of things.

I think there are a lot of teams going in very cautious because if you don’t have (a significant RFA) this year you probably have one next year.”

Tkachuk could sign a deal between $7 and $10 million a season depending on the term of deal.

RFA ranges have somewhat been set between William Nylander at $6.9 million and Auston Matthews $11.6 million.

Other big named RFAs include Mitch Marner, Brayden Point, Mikko Rantanen, Sebastian Aho, Brock Boeser, Timo Meier, Charlie McAvoy, Kyle Connor and Patrik Laine.

Flames also need to re-sign forward Sam Bennett and goaltender David Rittich.

The Flames may need to move out some salary with Michael Frolik and TJ Brodie in the rumor mill.
