NHL Rumors: Philadelphia Flyers – Free Agency, Filppula, and Simmonds
The Philadelphia Flyers and Chuck Fletcher appear likely to move Wayne Simmonds.
On the Philadelphia Flyers …

Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Daily News: Flyers GM Ron Hextall on free agency.

“We have money to spend short term; we can do something short term,” said Hextall, who said he does not plan to pursue free agent Ilya Kovalchuk. “We can do something short term in the sense that it doesn’t bottle us up in three or four years. We will do that if the right piece is there.”

Free agent options that the Flyers might consider include Paul Stastny, Riley Nash, Michael Grabner, and Ian Cole.

Though it may be a fallback if they can’t find another center, but Hextall didn’t rule out re-signing Valterri Filppula.

Hextall hasn’t talked to Wayne Simmonds camp yet, but he plans to talk with them “at some point” about a possible extension.

Chris Nichols of FRS Hockey: Elliotte Friedman on NHL Network said that the Flyers are looking for a right-handed defenseman. 29-year old forward Wayne Simmonds is a year away from being a free agent, and it’s another area the Flyers could be looking to address this offseason.

“I wrote about the comparable with him and T.J. Oshie, and when I wrote it I completely forgot that T.J. Oshie and Wayne Simmonds are represented by the same people. So you look at that Oshie deal – eight years, 5.75 – I wonder if that’s what Simmonds is going to kind of take a look at.

“I don’t know if Philly is going to do that, but it worked for Washington and I wonder if Philly is going to consider something like that for Simmonds.”
