Kessel not sold on the Wild … A Zucker trade seems inevitable

Michael Russo of The Athletic: It’s well known that Phil Kessel wouldn’t waive his no-trade clause for a trade to the Minnesota Wild in a deal that involved winger Jason Zucker.

Sources said that despite talking to Wild GM Paul Fenton, Kessel didn’t believe the team is close to winning the Cup. Sources also said that Kessel was concerned about who would get him the puck and couldn’t be sold on their young talent.

Fenton could now be in a tricky position with free agents and other players with no-trade clauses.

Zucker must not be too happy as this is the second time a trade involving him has fallen through and leaked. Zucker’s agent may not be impressed either and he also represents defenseman Jared Spurgeon, who has a year left on his deal. The Wild may be interested in signing him to an extension this offseason.

It seems inevitable that Zucker will be moved, and his 10-team no-trade clause doesn’t kick in until July 1st.

Sources say the among the interested teams are the Vancouver Canucks, Arizona Coyotes, Anaheim Ducks, and Calgary Flames. Last June the Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes had some interest.

Top five Penguins trade bait list

Dan Kingerski of Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Pittsburgh Penguins trade bait list.

5. Bryan Rust – Can play both sides and played on all four lines this past season. Has three years left on his deal with a $3.5 million salary cap hit. Could be included in a package. Probability – 2 in 10.

4. Teddy Blueger – Played better down the middle than on the wing. Finally cracked the Penguins line at 25-years old. Won’t be in many rumors. Fourth line centers don’t bring a lot of value. Probability – 2 in 10.

3. Tristan Jarry – Has potential to be a start but the 24-year old is behind Casey DeSmith and Matt Murray on the depth chart. Probability – 5 in 10.

2. Olli Maatta – Penguins have depth on the left side of their blue line. Dealt with injuries and consistent play. Carries a $4 million salary cap hit. A change of scenery could be good for both sides. Probability – 8 in 10.

1. Phil Kessel – Will be 32-years old soon and will be in the rumor mill leading up to the draft. He carries a $6.8 million salary cap hit. The Penguins may have to retain some salary or take back less than fair market value. It’s well known that Kessel wouldn’t mind playing for coach Rick Tocchet, who is in Arizona. Probability – 8 in 10.

Honorable mention: Patric Hornqvist and Jack Johnson.
