Oilers gain some cap space to use for help on the blueline
Mark Spector: With the Anaheim Ducks claiming Pontus Aberg and with the trade of Jakub Jerabek to the St. Louis Blues, the Edmonton Oilers moved two contracts and cleared almost $2 million in salary cap space if they decide to a shop for a defenseman.
Canucks GM didn’t the trade offers he was getting this offseason
Jeff Paterson: Vancouver Canucks GM Jim Benning said that he had tried to change their blueline over the summer but he didn’t like the offers he was getting.
Still no progress on a Ritchie deal
David Pagnotta: As of yesterday afternoon, there was still nothing new to report between the Anaheim Ducks and restricted free agent Nick Ritchie. Things can always change quickly, but there is no progress on a new deal yet.
Pickard on waivers
Dobber Hockey: It would be a surprise if goaltender Calvin Pickard doesn’t clear waivers and then is traded like he was last year by the Vegas Golden Knights.
Murray Pam: Depending on the extent of Carolina Hurricanes Scott Darling‘s injury, the Hurricanes claiming Pickard seems like a no-brainer.
Spitballing on Yzerman’s future
Chris Nichols of Nichols on Hockey: Bob McKenzie on his Bobcast touched on Steve Yzerman‘s potential future. Most people think he’ll eventually end up in Detroit.
Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland signed a two-year extension this past offseason, and Yzerman has a year left on his deal with the Lightning. McKenzie spitballing and not reporting:
“I’m spitballing and saying what I could see happening is Steve Yzerman coming in to run the fortunes of the Detroit Red Wings when his contract expires in Tampa after this coming season.
“And I could see Kenny Holland moving up the food chain to make way for Yzerman, or I could see Kenny Holland maybe being a candidate or a possibility with the new Seattle expansion team.”
