NHL Rumors: New York Islanders – Tavares, Trotz, and Grubauer
New York Islanders just named head coach Barry Trotz has already spoken with John Tavares. The Islanders are looking at Washington Capitals backup goaltender Philipp Grubauer.
On the New York Islanders …

Pierre LeBrun: Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello said there is zero chance that he would do a sign-and-trade involving John Tavares.

Jonathan Davis: “Continuing to hear from sources that Lou is doing his utmost to convince JT and his agent Pat Brisson that there is no need to meet with other teams when the free agency period opens on Sunday. Conversations are going on daily with the Isles and CAA.”

TSN Insider Trading: Darren Dreger says that newly hired head coach Barry Trotz has already spoken with pending UFA center John Tavares.

“The stability of the hiring of Barry Trotz is going to make a difference. It may not necessarily be a deal-maker because there are other elements that Tavares has to consider. The roster being among them, the quality of their goaltending is certainly on that list and the future home of the New York Islanders as well.”

TSN Insider Trading: Bob McKenzie says that the New York Islanders are one of five or six teams that are interested in Washington Capitals backup goaltender Philipp Grubauer.

“So the Islanders are interested, the Carolina Hurricanes are interested and in the Western Conference you’ve got the Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks and Colorado Avalanche, amongst others, who to varying degrees require some level of goaltending and Grubauer may or may not fit the bill in those instances.”

McKenzie adds that it’s believed that the Capitals are looking for at least a first-round pick for Grubauer.

Pierre LeBrun adds that if/when Grubauer is traded, the RFA will be looking for a bridge contract to prove he’s a No. 1.
