The New York Rangers and Jacob Trouba getting closer on a big extension

Larry Brooks of the NY Post: The New York Rangers and restricted free agent Jacob Trouba have been talking extension. He is expected to sign a seven-year deal with a cap hit around $7.5 to $8 million per season.

Teams are calling now free agent defenseman Dion Phaneuf

Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic: Teams are calling on Dion Phaneuf, and he hopes to find a competitive team with the right fit.

“I want to join a team that’s competitive, but the league is so competitive now, there’s a lot of teams that are right there,” said Phaneuf. “For me, it’s going to be looking for a fit and hopefully one comes up here.’’

Going to be different seeing Joe Pavelski in a different jersey next season

Kevin Kurz: Spoke with Dan Plante, Joe Pavelski’s agent. The sense is that he won’t be re-signing with the San Jose Sharks and that he’ll be with a new team next year.

Patrick Marleau not ready to retire

Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic: Patrick Marleau is back in San Jose with this family and hasn’t held back where he’d like to play next season.

“Yeah, it would be nice to come back here and play where I started,” Marleau said. “It would be a good fit for me for sure.’’

The Sharks have a lot on the go with some big decisions to make that could take time. If not with the Sharks, he’s not ready to retire yet and a fit out West would be good.

“I’m definitely not ready to retire, I think I’ve got some really good hockey left in me,” he said. “I couldn’t give you an exact number of years but it’s going to be more than one, I know that.’’
