The Detroit Red Wings have pending UFAs to move, but they may be looking to re-sign some

TSN: Darren Dreger notes that the Detroit Red Wings have a collection of pending unrestricted free agents that GM Ken Holland could move at the trade deadline.

Jimmy Howard of course, an experienced goaltender, and there is a few teams that use an upgrade in that department, likely to be available. Beyond that you look at Nyquist, you look at Glendening and then you look at the big hitting experience of Nik Kronwall on the back end. You could build the case that he could fit in the top four.”

Ansar Khan of MLive: Red Wing free agents Jimmy Howard and Gustav Nyquist could draw trade interest ahead of the deadline next month.

A source has said the initial asking price for each player is a first-round pick, though they don’t expect to get it.

This is one of the reasons they will look to re-sign both players.

The Red Wings will likely want to re-sign Howard to a two-year deal. They don’t see Jonathan Bernier as a starter and their prospects aren’t ready yet.

They could look at trading Howard at the deadline and re-sign him when free agency starts on July 1st. If the Red Wings hold strong on a first-round pick asking price, he won’t be moved.

For the most part, it was believed that Nyquist would be dealt, but recent developments have them looking at the idea of re-signing him. It may take a three- or four-year deal at over $5 million a season to get him signed. The Red Wings do have some other young players ready for a top-six role.

The Red Wings would like to re-sign defenseman Nick Jensen.

The Red Wings won’t be trading defenseman Niklas Kronwall unless he requests a trade, which seems unlikely.

Forward Thomas Vanek has a no-trade clause and limited value if would waive his NTC.

Defenseman Trevor Daley has a year left at $3.17 million and could interest teams.

Forward Luke Glendening is another trade option and maybe Toronto Maple Leafs Mike Babcock would renew his interest again this season.
