NHL Rumors: Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, And GM Without An Extension
Matt Moulson and Tomas Tatar
On the Buffalo Sabres and Matt Moulson

Mike Harrington: Coach Phil Housley on Matt Moulson: “Jason and his agent are working on some options, but that’s as much as I know at this point.”

Mike Harrington: From Housley’s quote (above), may mean there might be some interest in Moulson but the Sabres would have to retain some salary. No one will want to take on the full contract.

Mike Harrington: (responding to a tweet from @ictls1515 that notes that Vegas GM George McPhee is the Godfather of Matt Moulson’s wife and that the Moulson’s named their child after McPhee) has wondered about Golden Knights and also about the Islanders. If the Sabres retain some salary, they might be able to get a low-round draft pick for him.

On the Detroit Red Wings …

John Niyo of the Detroit News: Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland‘s future is a little uncertain as there have been no apparent contract extension talks.

The Red Wings have few ‘high-end prospects’ and too many bad contracts. No team is interested in taking on their bad contracts.

Holland said yesterday that the Wings have about a month to show that they shouldn’t become a seller at the trade deadline.

“I look at the next 10 or 15 games for this team as being critical in determining what direction we’re gonna go,” he said.”

If they become sellers, players they could look to move include Gustav Nyquist, Tomas Tatar, Mike Green, Trevor Daley, and Jimmy Howard.

On GMs on expiring contracts …

Jeremy Rutherford: Contract extension talks between St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong and owner Tom Stillman have started.

Bob McKenzie: There are five GMs that we know of that are in the final year of their contracts – Ken Holland (Detroit), Chuck Fletcher (Minnesota), Doug Armstrong (St. Louis), Lou Lamoriello (Toronto) and Jim Benning (Vancouver).

Bob McKenzie: There is some speculation that there could be another GM or two that is also in the final year of their contract.
