NHL Rumors and Notes: Jets and Trouba … Oilers and Nurse
Darnell Nurse
Trouba isn’t ruling out a long-term extension with the Jets

Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press: Winnipeg Jets defenseman Jacob Trouba was asked if a long-term extension with the Jets is unlikely given their ‘rocky history.’

“No, after this year we’ll sit down and we’ll go over it again. And do the same thing we did, whatever, after every contract. Go back and kind of reassess things and see where you are and make the best decision,” Trouba told reporters Sunday.

Trouba will be an RFA again after this season, his last season before he’s eligible to be a UFA. If they aren’t able to reach a long-term agreement, he could be moved as they won’t want to lose him for nothing.

Don’t expect anything to happen soon as the Jets are hoping to make another run. The closer it gets to Trouba becoming a UFA, the less trade value he has.

January 1st, 2019 is the earliest he’s eligible to sign a contract extension.

RFA Nurse confident a deal will be reached before camp starts

Dave McCarthy of NHL.com: Edmonton Oilers restricted free agent defenseman Darnell Nurse is confident that they will be able to reach an agreement before the start of training camp.

“At some point it will get done, but I’m just excited to get into the season,” the 23-year-old defenseman told SiriusXM NHL Network Radio at BioSteel Camp on Monday. “I know at some point I’ll be lacing up beside the boys and I’m very confident that at some point before camp it will be done.”

Though training camp opens in a few weeks, Nurse isn’t worried that a deal hasn’t been reached yet and that he’s not alone on that front.

“From my standpoint, I’m not worked up at all,” Nurse said. “It will get done at some point. The big question is always why isn’t it done, but I’m not the first guy to ever go through this and there’s a lot of guys going through it too. I’m not the only guy right now without a contract who is a defenseman and is an RFA.”
