Elliotte Friedman: The Golden Knights asked for a two-year deal for defenseman Nate Schmidt in salary arbitration – $950,000 and $1 million – with Schmidt asking for $2.75 million for one-year.

Joe Haggerty: The Bruins hired Jay Leach to be the head coach of the Providence Bruins. They named Spencer Cerberry an assistant and Mike Dunham as their goalie development coach.

On the Buffalo Sabres …

Buffalo Sabres: The Sabres and defenseman Nathan Beaulieu agreed on a two-year deal with a salary cap hit of $2.4 million.

On the Columbus Blue Jackets …

Columbus Blue Jackets: The Blue Jackets and head coach John Tortorella agreed on a one-year contract extension. The deal will run through 2018-19.

“John Tortorella and his coaching staff have done a terrific job since his arrival nearly two years ago,” said Kekalainen. “He is one of the top coaches in our game and we are excited about what lies ahead for our club with John as our head coach.”

Tortorella just won the Jack Adam Award and has an 84-57-16 record since taking over the team.
