NHL fines the Devils $3 million and loss of draft picks
  • TSN: The NHL has come down hard on the New Jersey Devils for attempting to circumvent the salary cap on the first Ilya Kovalchuk contract.

The Devils were fined $3 million and the forfeit of their 2011 3rd round pick, and a 1st round pick in one of the next 4 seasons. The Devils will have the choice in what year they will forfeit the pick, and must do so the day after the Stanley Cup is awarded.

  • Tom Gulitti via twitter: From a Lou Lamoriello statement “We disagree with the decision. We acted in good faith and did nothing wrong. We will have no further comment.”
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: There is no salary cap penalty to the Devils, McKenzie believes that option was eliminated when the CBA was re-written.
