Morning Rumors II: Goaltender Edition: Hurricanes and Leafs
  • The Fourth Period: Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford on Hockey Central on his goaltenders Cam Ward, Anton Khudobin and Justin Peters.

“There’s enough interest in any one of the three,” Rutherford confirmed.

“I think the real question is, do we carry three or do we make a move and move one? The biggest thing for me is if we move one, it makes it better for two goalies. With three goalies, they just don’t get enough practice time, they don’t get their own net. That’s a decision we’re going to have to make prior to the deadline.”

Cam Ward has been sent to the AHL to get a couple games on a conditioning assignment. Ward has a no-trade clause, but sources saying he could be open to a change of scenery. Ward has two years left on his deal. Khudobin and Peters are pending UFAs. It’s thought the Hurricanes would like to re-sign Khudobin.

  • Hope Smoke: Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford: “I wouldn’t put one of our three goalies on waivers because I know there is enough interest out there.”
  • Hope Smoke: Bob McKenzie: “I don’t think it’s out of the question that Cam Ward is dealt but I don’t think it’s likely either.” … “Cam Ward has a no trade and he’s not going anywhere if he doesn’t want to.”
  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger: “Bernier’s play may have changed how teams look at James Reimer as an available asset” … “The teams that do view Reimer as a starting goalie may have had enough examples to change that opinion”
