Around the Boards: More Oilers on the Block, Flyers interested in Halak again, Jeff Carter not going anywhere, Hudler back next year?
  • Hockey Night in Canada Hotstove Video
  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun:
    • Add the names Andrew Cogliano, Robert Nilsson and Ethan Moreau to list of Edmonton Oilers who could be traded. Basically anyone on their roster can be had.
    • The 2011 Winter Classic could be head in Minnesota, a decision on where the game will be held won’t be announced until the summer.
    • The decision if Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock is fired or not may come from the team president and not the GM. Some players are hoping for a change.
    • The Flyers may still be interested in Jaroslav Halak, Bob Gainey may lower is asking price (asked for Jeff Carter before).
    • Talk that the Rangers will place Wade Redden and his massive contract on waivers and send him to the AHL.
    • The Dallas Stars might be in the goalie market. Marty Turco will be a UFA, and have shown some interest in Martin Biron but may prefer Jaroslav Halak.
  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN:
    • Flyers GM Paul Holgren told ESPN that they are not trading Jeff Carter.
    • Lots of teams are calling the Hurricanes about Ray Whitney. He has a no-trade clause and has been approached yet if he’ll waive it.
    • Curtis Joseph will officially retire on Tuesday.
    • The players escrow account could become an issue in the next labor talks, as the players didn’t get their money back last year, and won’t this year.
  • Amsar Khan of MLive.com: Red Wings GM Ken Holland has 14 UFA and RFAs to deal with this year: UFAs Nicklas Lidstrom, Brett Lebda, Doug Janik and Andreas Lilja,  Tomas Holmstrom, Kirk Maltby, Todd Bertuzzi, Jason Williams and Brad May. RFAs Derek Meech and forwards Patrick Eaves, Drew Miller, Darren Helm and Justin Abdelkader. Nik Lidstrom will be the real interesting one. There also might be a chance that Jiri Hudler could return, he has an out clause in his Russian contract, and told Holland “He told me he’s not sure what he’s doing next year,’’. If Hudler does return, he will be a $2.875 million cap hit from his arbitration case last summer.
  • Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: The jury is still out on Leafs goalie Jonas Gustavsson if he’s a legit #1 NHL goaltender. Burke will have the remainder of the season to determine if ‘The Monster’ deserves a long term contract from the Leafs. Toskala will gone, so the Leafs could also be looking for another goalie.
  • The website that reported Dion Phaneuf requested a trade is saying that the Dallas Stars could be interested in Saku Koivu.
