Habs defencemen of recent years

I was listening to an old time Canadiens fan today. He complained about how the Habs haven’t had Francois Beauchemin patrolling the blue line for the past 5 years. With Streit and Souray also leaving in past few years, I decided I would put together a list of “Top 6 defencemen drafted by the Habs, given away for nothing in return”. I think the below is a stronger defence corp than at least 20 teams in the league, and is clearly better than the current Habs defence.

Enjoy Habs fans:

    1. Mark Streit — Drafted in 2004 and leaves as a free agent in 2008. He is #1 defenceman on the Isle and possibly the top defenceman in New York.
    2. Ron Hainsey – After being the #13 overall pick in 2000, he was claimed off waivers by Columbus in 2005. Great work by Doug McLean and company. Top 2-3 Defencemen in Atlanta and Columbus.
    3. Francois Beauchemin – Drafted in the 3rd round in 1998. Was claimed off waivers by Columbus. #3 defenceman in Anaheim and likely #2 in Toronto.
    4. Mike Komisarek — Drafted 7th overall in 2001, leaves as a free agent in 2009. Top 4 defenceman on every team in the NHL.
    5. Stephane Robidas — He was drafted in 1995 and claimed on waivers in 2002 by Atlanta. A tough defender with leadership qualities, and was arguably, the Stars #1 defenceman last season.
    6. Brett Clark — Though, a role player, he is 33 years old, has now played 453 games in the NHL, and has become a consistent contributor for Colorado.
