Mikko Koskinen has some trade value this upcoming April.

Oilers put two on waivers

Elliotte Friedman: The Edmonton Oilers put forwards Ty Rattie and Ryan Spooner on waivers.

Cap Friendly: “ have placed Spooner & Rattie on waivers. If both clear, & are assigned to the AHL, Oilers would still be $1.395M in full cap value above the ceiling. By our calculation, that’s the equivalent of 2 additional assignments, or a trade, in order to activate Sekera off LTIR.”

Kurt Leavins: “On the waiving of Spooner & Rattie: Spooner gave them little choice to make a bad trade look even worse. As for Rattie, I wonder what we “don’t” see about the player, because ON the ice…I think the could do worse.”

Media notes on the Koskinen contract

Chris Johnston: The Edmonton Oilers have signed goaltender Mikko Koskinen to the three-year contract extension.

2019-2020: $5.2M
2020-2021: $3.3M+$500,000 SB
2021-2022: $4.5M

Darren Dreger: From understanding the Oilers had spoken to Cam Talbot a couple of days ago about Koskinen’s extension. They didn’t want to have Talbot blindside by the news. Would guess that Talbot would be open to a trade to just about any team right now.

Jim Matheson: “With Koskinen signing, obviously looks like they’ve turned the page on Talbot, also UFA July 1. They have nobody on the farm ready to back-up. They should be trying to trade for Pittsburgh’s Tristan Jarry in the summer. But what do they do with Talbot at trade deadline?”

Ryan Rishaug: A couple points on Koskinen contract.

“- A Talbot extension seemed highly unlikely.

– What were their options going to be this summer? Realistic targets in net? Weigh those against todays deal.

– They like Koskinens work ethic, room presence, and have seen his high end game.”

Signing him now has it’s risks considering the small sample size.

– Waiting has its risks because he has shown how good he can be. If he regains that form, term and $ go up as do potential suitors. Scrutiny on this deal is fair,But the goalie market they face come summer matters”

Dustin Nielson: “I don’t even care about the number. I’m just mystified by the timing of this Koskinen deal….and I don’t ever throw the term mystified out there.”

Jim Matheson: “Three years is what I felt Oilers would give the UFA Koskinen but if it’s 4.5 million a year, almost double what he’s making now…after 27 NHL games? Would it hurt to make that fiscal call after he’s been through the league a bit more?”
