Doan rumor update … Stars expect Morrow to be with team next year … Neil gets 3 year extension … Blues sign Langenbrunner
  • Fox Sports Arizona via twitter: Shane Doan’s agent said if they don’t have an answer by July 16th (regarding Phoenix situation), they may get serious with regards to other offers.
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Doan’s familiarity with the Rangers coaching staff could help lead them to being one of his preferred landing spots. Doan has a history with all 4 of their coaches and has a long friendship with their assistant GM/coach Jim Schoenfeld. The Rangers signed Jeff Halpren to a 1 year deal worth $700,000.
  • Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: The Maple Leafs are one of a dozen teams that are have made calls on Shane Doan. The Blackhawks, Red Wings and Canucks are thought to be the leaders. Others to have made a pitch are: Blues, Canadiens, Penguins, Flyers, Rangers, Jets and Kings.
  • Elliott Pap of the Vancouver Sun: It’s hard to see a scenario where Doan is willing to settle for less than the $4.55 million he’s been getting annually. The Canucks are currently at $67.2 million, and are able to exceed the $70.2 million cap by 10% in the summer. Their number will drop if/when they trade Roberto Luongo. The Canucks are a contender and Doan is from Western Canada. Doan has a relationship with Canucks assistant GM Laurence Gilman.
  • Jason Bothchord of the Vancouver Province: The Canucks are one of many teams interested in Doan. 2-3 warrant serious interest, and location, management, players and Stanley Cup chances will be factors according to Doan’s agent Terry Bross. Doan could get offers in the 4 or 5 year range, worth $5-6 million.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Dallas Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk said yesterday that he’s had talks with Brenden Morrow, and that he expects him to be a big part of the Stars next season. There has been speculation that Morrow could be traded after the signings of Ray Whitney and Jaromir Jagr. Morrow’s spot on the roster could be on the 3rd line.

“There’s nothing written in stone, so I’m not saying he would play there, but I also think that he could play a very important part of our team in a role like that,” Nieuwendyk said. “He would bring a lot of the grit that we need there, and I still think would play in a role that would allow him to score some goals. It would also allow him to maybe stay fresher.”

Morrow wants to stay a Star, and talks about the speculation:

“You asked me: Do I want to be a Dallas Star, and the answer is definitely yes,” Morrow said. “If they want to trade me or they indicate to me that they don’t want me, then obviously I don’t want to be there or stand in their way. But, until they say that they want to trade me or ask me to waive my no-trade clause, then I’m excited to be on the team and I’m ready to get going next season.”

  • Mike Brophy of Sportsnet.ca: So the Leafs could be comfortable going with James Reimer and Ben Scrivens if they can’t land Roberto Luongo or any other capable veteran. Despite saying initially that they needed veteran, Burke has been backpedaling. Who will step forward to take the reins as the #1 has yet to be determined.
  • Don Brennan via twitter: The Senators have signed Chris Neil to a 3 year contract extension, believed to be worth $5.75 million.
