NHL Rumors I: Coyotes, Flames, Devils, Blackhawks, Sabres and Bruins
  • Larry Brooks: (yesterday morning) Three sources have said that Andrew Barroway was backing out of his deal to buy part of the Coyotes. None have recanted that position.
  • Stephen Whyno: Gary Bettman on Barroway buying 51 percent of the Coyotes: “All of the parties are interested in moving it along as quickly as they can.”
  • Damien Cox of Sportnet: The Flames have more than $19 million in available salary cap space to take advantage of if they chose.

“You can quote me on this. We are budgeted as a full cap team,” said Burke today at the conclusion of the NHL’s board of governors meetings.

“The only reason we haven’t been a cap team so far is we haven’t seen the value. But the second we do, (general manager) Brad Treliving is authorized to go right to the cap.”

Teams like the Coyotes, Sabres and Hurricanes could be looking to move out some contracts. The Blue Jackets could be in the same situation.

  • Craig Custance: Devils GM Lou Lamoriello has been trying to trade Damien Brunner, who hasn’t fit in well with coach Peter DeBoer. Brunner makes $2.5 million, so Lamoriello may have to eat some of his salary or take back some salary in a trade. Brunner would love to return to the Red Wings, but they have plenty of young talent on the wing. At the moment there are no plans for him to return to Europe, though that could change in a couple weeks. Custance thinks the Stars could be an option. Blackhawks Jeremy Morin didn’t exactly demand a trade, but …

“It’s more of a case of both parties recognizing he’s not in plans,” he said. “Stan is working the phones.”

  • Chris Kuc: Source saying that four or five teams have called the Blackhawks about Jeremy Morin.
  • Pucksly19 on Instgram: Scouting Kings and Sabres: Senators, Flyers, Avalanche, Stars, Bruins, Lightning, Flames, Red Wings, Rangers, Ducks and Coyotes.
  • Chris Kuc: 10 teams scouted the Blackhawks and Devils game last night.
  • Nichols on Hockey: Elliotte Friedman on Sportsnet 960.

“The one I think they’re kind of looking at is – I really think Buffalo would like to do something with Chris Stewart. He’s a healthy scratch today. Ted Nolan called him soft and that’s not good for a guy’s trade value, last I heard.

“I had heard – Peter Chiarelli wouldn’t talk on the weekend, but I heard there was nothing imminent in Boston. And then down at the BOG today, the word I got was I think the Sabres and Bruins are finally going to decide if there’s a deal to be made here. So I wouldn’t be surprised if sometime in the next week or so, before the deadline kicks in on the 19th, I think the Sabres and the Bruins are going to maybe decide do we have a match here or not.”
