  • Jason Gregor: Blues Federko: ”I believe Backes will start for sure. Oshie is a bit of a question because it was a head injury, but I expect he’ll play.” … ”It looks like Berglund will miss this series so someone like Ott, Paajarvi or Morrow will have to step an produce in that spot.”
  • Adrian Dater: It is unlikely that John Mitchell will play in the first round. They will likely be without two of their top three centers for the series.

  • Lou Korac: Blues David Backes is traveling with the team. Chances are slim that he plays on Saturday, but Monday is not out of the question.

  • Mike Heika: Stars Ryan Garbutt is questionable for today and Vernon Fiddler is probably ready to return.
  • Randy Miller: Devils Damien Brunner left last night’s game with a suspected knee injury. It’s too early to say if Ryane Clowe would replace Brunner if he can’t go.
  • Nashville Predators: Predators Pekka Rinne has not suffered any setbacks involving his bacterial infection in his hip. Doctors are recommending limited activity for the next two weeks before increasing the activity.

While we were cautiously optimistic Pekka might begin activities now, our primary concern has been, and is, for the long-term. We – Pekka, the team, doctors and our fans – want the same thing and that is for Pekka to be at 100 percent and back in goal for the Predators as soon as possible. However, we also understand we are dealing with a situation that includes some uncertainty and does not involve a specific timetable for treatment and recovery.

Pekka will continue to be monitored on a daily basis by our medical team. We will provide further updates as warranted.

  • NHL: Coyotes Shane Doan has been out since December 4th with an illness, which has now been diagnosed as “sypmtoms of Rockey Mountain spotted fever” according to Don Maloney.

Mayoclinic.com says, “Rocky Mountain spotted fever is a tick-borne bacterial disease that affects the cells in the lining of your blood vessels, making the vessels leak. This can eventually cause serious damage to internal organs, particularly your kidneys.”

    Doan is week-to-week.

“Our medical team is on top of it,” Maloney told Azcentral.com. “Every day he seems like he’s getting a little better and a little more energy and has started to exercise a little more. We’re encouraged. He’s trending in a positive manner and for us. It’s just going to take time.”

“He’s disappointed but he’s in good spirits,” Maloney told the team website. “The good thing is he’s feeling better every day. If he was stuck in neutral that’s different, but he isn’t. He’s getting more energy each day and becoming more active. Hopefully that trend continues.”

  • Jon Rosen of LA Kings Insider: The Sabres have asked permission to speak with Kings Director of Amateur Scouting, Mike Futa, as they continue their search for a new GM.
  • Jimmy Murphy: Bruins Shawn Thornton will get more games than Penguins James Neal, but many NHL team employees and media “insiders” think what Neal did was just as bad or worse than what Thornton did.
  • Sunaya Sapurji: According to @UffeBodin, the Predators will loan Filip Forsberg to Sweden for the WJC.
  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger: ”Nonis told me that if Rielly wasn’t playing we would have to consider sending him to the WJC. It’s unlikely but we would consider” … ”Since Rielly has suddenly become a healthy scratch every game it is definitely something Nonis will look at.”

Morning Rumors: Kulikov, Islanders, Michalek, Del Zotto, Clowe, Predators and Moulson

  • Adrian Dater via Sulia: Dater has also heard that an Avs-Panthers deal involving Dmitry Kulikov may have fell through due to the fear that Kulikov may bolt for the KHL on a big contract offer at the end of the season.
  • Arthur Staple of Newsday: Islanders GM Garth Snow and owner Charles Wang watched the team extend their winless streak to nine games in LA on Saturday.

“We’re looking at all our options,” he told Newsday on Sunday just before he and Wang flew to Northern California for the league’s Board of Governors meeting at Pebble Beach. “The one thing we don’t do, whether it’s with the coaches or the players, is discuss conversations with anyone in the media. All the interactions I have with our team remain private.

“Obviously, we have some key players not performing at a high enough level. I understand the frustrations of our fans. We have those same frustrations in our locker room, in the coaches’ room, for myself. We felt we had guys who were ready to take the next step. Now we’re just trying to right the ship and win a few games.”

Sources saying he’s been looking for a goaltender for weeks. Evgeni Nabokov could be returning from his groin injury in the next few days. Snow would not comment on promoting Ryan Strome (9 goals and 24 assists) from the AHL, but sources saying that they are trying to find a way to bring him up. They would have to trade or waive someone.

  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Matheson thinks the Senators will look to move Milan Michalek, maybe to the Coyotes for a young defenseman and a different type of forward. Though they’ve been taking calls on Michael Del Zotto, with Marc Staal’s injury, the Rangers may have to keep him. Devils Ryane Clowe said he’s only had two concussions and not the four or five that have been reported.
  • Josh Cooper: You have to wonder if Predators coach Barry Trotz’s job is in danger at the end of the season if they fail to make the playoffs again. Cooper thinks the Predators need to make a trade for scoring, maybe looking at ‘renting’ winger Matt Moulson. Cooper thinks the Predators should send Filip Forsberg to the AHL when he’s ready to return from his injury.

“He’s a tremendous young kid. He has a lot of ability. He has a long way to go to play in the National Hockey League on a regular basis. I shouldn’t say play in the National Hockey League — to produce in the National Hockey League,” Trotz said. “I think he has a lot of great tools, exceptional hands and is a quality young man, but there’s still a long way for him to go.”
