NHL Rumors: Sabres, Canucks, Penguins, Kings, Panthers, Senators and Maple Leafs

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: Sabres GM Tim Murray is willing to trade almost anyone. He’s been shopping Chris Stewart, Christian Ehrhoff, Luke Adam and Drew Stafford. They will also listen to offers on Marcus Foligno, Johan Larsson and Chad Ruhwedel.

“He’s just open for business,” said a league executive about Murray before the weekend. “He hasn’t drafted any of these current guys.”

Pat LaFontaine interviewed 15 people before deciding on Tim Murray.

Coyotes assistant Brad Treliving may be one of the top candidates for the Canucks GM position.

The Penguins and Blackhawks were close to trading for Ryan Kesler at the deadline. Trading Kesler could be revisited at the draft.

There could be lots of changes in Carolina this offseason.

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma will be under the microscope if they don’t go far into the playoffs.

The Kings could be a landing spot for Mike Cammalleri.

John Ferguson Jr. could be the top candidate to replace Brendan Shanahan.

One option for Martin Brodeur next season is to mentor Marc-Andre Fleury in Pittsburgh. The Islanders also need a goaltender.

Panthers GM Dale Tallon may be on the hotseat. Garrioch suggests bringing in Doug MacLean as president to help Tallon.

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The Senators will have to decide if they want to re-sign pending UFAs Milan Michalek, Ales Hemsky and Matt Kassian. One year away from free agency will be Jason Spezza, Bobby Ryan, Craig Anderson, Clarke MacArthur and Marc Methot. Spezza knows changes are coming.

“I don’t look at it that way. I think that when you do have a season of disappointment there’s going to be change in the room. This isn’t going to be the same group next year and we’re all well aware of that,” said Spezza, in his first year as captain.

  • Steve Simmons: Dave Nonis’ inclination may have been to keep Randy Carlyle as coach. Brendan Shanahan may not think that way. Reports from New Jersey may be that Shanahan would like Peter DeBoer as they coach. Simmons likes the Leafs core of Phil Kessel, James van Riemsdyk, Jonathan Bernier, Tyler Bozak, Morgan Rielly and Jake Gardiner, but the contracts of Dion Phaneuf, Joffrey Lupul and David Clarkson will make it hard for them to build around their young core.
  • George Richards: Panthers defenseman Ed Jovanoski said wants to play year. The Panthers will have to pay him $4 million whether he plays or not. Steve Simmons: (responding) The Panthers will look to trade Jovanovski if possible. They are fed up with his lack of leadership as he’s not showing the kids the way.

NHL Rumors I: Kypreos, MacLean, Ferraro and Dreger Talk Maple Leafs

  • Hope Smoke: Nick Kypreos: ”If I look at the Leafs I say Kessel, Bozak, JVR, Phaneuf, Bernier and Rielly are safe and everyone else can be moved” … ”When you’re locked into some of these long-term deals it makes it very difficult to improve. Could be a long process here in TO”
  • Hope Smoke: Doug MacLean: ”If you get a #1 C & a #1 D then the Leafs have the making of a good team. There’s a reason guys like Dion & Phil were traded here” … ”There are warts on these players and that’s why they became available”
  • Hope Smoke: Ray Ferraro: ”#1 priority for the Leafs is a big Centre.”
  • Hope Smoke: Doug MacLean: ”Bieksa is no doubt available and he’s a guy who could come to Toronto and make a difference”
  • Hope Smoke: Doug MacLean: ”Is Bolland coming back? I keep hearing rumblings he’s going to Florida”
  • Hope Smoke: Ray Ferraro: ”If Nonis fires Carlyle his replacement is probably his last hire. Think it’s more likely goes with someone he’s more familiar with” … ”Would Nonis look at a guy like Dineen? Who’s the next hot young coach? It used to be Cooper & Boucher” … ”I’d think John Stevens and Davis Payne are guys that get interviewed for top jobs shortly”
  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger: ”I think there is enough evidence to suggest and I believe Carlyle will lose his job”

NHL Rumors: Maple Leafs and Hope Smoke Edition: Staal, Tavares and Stastny

  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger: ”If Eric Staal is available, is that type of player the guy who entices Nonis to trade Kadri and Gardiner and whatever else for him?”
  • Hope Smoke: Dreger added that it’s possible that Islanders John Tavares could reach a point where he doesn’t want to be in New York any longer. No intel on the matter, just a feeling by Dreger. Dreger: ”Rick Nash didn’t want to be the guy to come home to Toronto. Tavares is the type of guy who could handle Toronto
  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger: ”I think one way or another Kadri or Gardiner get addressed this summer”
  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger: ”I don’t think the Leafs pay Bolland over $5 million in the summer.”
  • Hope Smoke: Nick Kypreos: ”Colorado is prepared to pay Stastny $5 million this summer. If he wants more, he’s going to go somewhere else” ….  Adrian Dater responded ”the Toronto Maple Leafs”
  • Hope Smoke: Bob McKenzie: ”I don’t know how the Leafs win a lottery like the Ducks did when they acquired Pronger. Those guys aren’t moved & don’t hit UFA” … ”The Leafs are off to a good start in fixing their blueline with Gardiner & Rielly”

VIDEO: SportsNet HC Trade Tracker: Maple Leafs Jake Gardiner

Hockey Central panel discusses whether the Toronto Maple Leafs should trade Jake Gardiner. The 23-year old Gardiner carries a $875,000 salary cap hit and will be a RFA at the end of the season.

John Shannon thinks the Leafs should keep Gardiner and allow him to play more of the style he wants to play. Can the Leafs play both Gardiner and Morgan Rielly, both similar players? It could be dangerous to move a player like him.

Should the Maple Leafs trade Gardiner? If so, what type of deal should they be looking to do?

Morning Rumors: Maple Leafs, Rangers, Senators, Flames, Sabres and Expansion

  • Darren Dreger on TSN: Leafs GM Dave Nonis said that he’s received trade offers for James van Riemsdyk, Nazem Kadri, Jake Gardiner, Morgan Rielly, James Reimer and Jonathan Bernier. Most GM have only offered older players or packages at are not useful in the long-term. Nonis insists he’s not shopping Gardiner, but a rival management sources have said that his name was been brought up by the Maple Leafs in their search for a top-six forward. At this time, there doesn’t appear to be a fit anywhere. The Rangers continue to shop Michael Del Zotto, with the Leafs showing some interest. Cody Franson could be a target for the Rangers. The Senators are still in the mix for Del Zotto, though their interest may have cooled. The Senators may be willing to trade either Eric Gryba, Joe Corvo or Patrick Wiercioch.
  • Kevin Allen of USA Today: Case for trading: Rangers Dan Girardi seems to have less impact under coach Alain Vigneault. Moving Ryan Callahan would symbolize the Rangers going a different direction under Vigneault. They could trade both and still be able to stay in the playoff hunt. They could get a veteran and a prospect and/or draft pick in return for both. Case to not trade: GMs are always looking for players like Callahan and every coach loves shutdown guys like Girardi. The Rangers are not rebuilding and are suppose to be a contending team.
  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger: ”I know the Rangers love Cody Franson. They could make a Del Zotto for Franson trade tomorrow.” … ”Franson may be a disappointment but he has tremendous trade value around the NHL”
  • Hope Smoke: Bob McKenzie: ”Nonis is contemplating trades. The guy people want and who Nonis may move is Gardiner and that’s a mistake” … ”Puck moving defenseman are really hard to come by” … ”Unless a center of similar age and talent are offered then moving Gardiner is dangerous.
  • Hope Smoke: Bob McKenzie: ”Seems like everything with Gardiner and Carlyle isn’t hand in glove. When he makes a mistake Carlyle wants to sit him down”
  • Hope Smoke: Bob McKenzie on TSN Radio: ”Flames are not moving quickly in their GM search. Other than Nieuwendyk, Burke hasn’t asked for permission for others” … ”The Sabres won’t hire anybody until the new year and the Flames search may last this entire season” …  “Burke really likes Mike Futa of the Kings. The Leafs were very close to hiring him prior to his going to LA”
  • Louis Jean: Reports of Seattle and Las Vegas being the front-runners for expansion are premature. Source saying nothing has changed since the BOG meetings, they will continue to listen to groups that are interest.
  • Wayne Scanlan of the Ottawa Citizen: The Senators pursued David Clarkson at the start of free agency last year. Scanlan also notes that Clarke MacArthur was “run out of town on a rail by Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle.”
  • Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: Maple Leafs GM Dave Nonis has a message for his players.

“If they’re waiting for a coaching change, they’re going to be waiting a long time,” Nonis said in a lengthy interview on Wednesday.

“It’s not happening. We’re not making a move (player or coach) for the sake of making a move. We’re not trading a young player away that will erode our depth or take youth out of our lineup. We don’t do that.

“Do I like what’s going on? No. We have to find a way of getting out of this as a group. Players. Coaches. Management. No one is going to help us. I’m getting a lot of offers on players, but the offers are all a joke. I’m not about to trade a quality player for someone who can’t help us. That’s what’s being presented our way.

“If I could make changes this afternoon I would, but it has to be a positive move for the organization. Look, there’s no one coming over the hill to help us. We have to do it ourselves.”
