Rumors involving the Oilers … List of forwards that could be available … Ovie, Michalek have hearings … Rangers need Dman … Benn to IR

  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers are taking calls for Ales Hemsky as half the league is looking for a top 6 forward. The Oilers need a puck moving defenseman more than a draft pick. It’s unlikely the Predators would give up Ryan Ellis for Hemsky. One scout thinks the Predators would rather have Ryan Smyth over Hemsky, but Smyth likely won’t waive his no-trade clause at the deadline. The Senators are a wild card for Hemsky. The Oilers have liked Drew Stafford. Matheson wonders if the Kings would be interested in a Jonathan Bernier for Magnus Paajarvi deal this summer. The Blackhawks might take a look at Chris Campoli for their 4-5 hole that they are looking to fill. The Predators may look at taking offers for backup Anders Lindback this summer.
  • Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Molinari lists some ‘rental’ players that could be available this year: Jason Blake (Ana), Josh Green (Edm), Nicklas Hagman (Ana), Adam Hall (TB), Ales Hemsky (Edm), Kristian Huselius (CBJ), Saku Koivu (Ana), Dominic Moore (TB), Frans Nielsen (NYI), Samuel Pahlsson (Ana), Jay Pandolfo (NYI), P.A. Parenteau (NYI), George Parros (Ana), Vinny Prospal (CBJ), Tuomo Ruutu (Car), Teemu Selanne (Ana) and Ryan Smyth (Edm).
  • Bob McKenzie via twitter: Capitals Alex Ovechkin will have a hearing today for his high hit on Michalek. Penguins Zbynek Michalek will have a hearing today for his elbow on Hendricks.
  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Rangers GM Glen Sather needs to add a defenseman that can handle big minutes down the stretch. They’ve always liked Hurricanes defenseman Tim Gleason. Stars Sheldon Souray is an interesting option given his ability on the power play, but there are questions about his ability to defend. Ryan Suter is a possibility if he becomes available and if they want to go that direction.
  • Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Heika wonders if the Stars may have to consider moving Stephane Robidas, Brenden Morrow or Nicklas Grossman to create roster room for younger players. Heika doesn’t think so, as it sends a message that they are giving up this year. If they fall out of the race though, they may do something.
  • Tim Campbell of the Winnipeg Free Press: Jets Dustin Byfuglien and Evander Kane didn’t accompany the team to Carolina for tonight’s game. They play the Rangers on Tuesday in NY. Byfuglien and Kane are not expected to play until after the All-Star break.
  • Aaron Portzline via twitter: Blue Jackets forward R.J. Umberger could play tonight after missing the last 5 games with a concussion. Predators defenseman Ryan Suter is expected to be back after missing 3 games with an upper-body injury.
  • Shawn Mitchell via twitter: Recently signed Brett Lebda will make his debut tonight, and will be on the top pairing with Fedor Tyutin.
  • David Alter via twitter: Leafs lines at yesterday’s practice: Lupul-Bozak-Kessel, Crabb-Grabo-Kulie, Lombardi-Connolly-Kadri, MacArthur-Steckel-Brown, x Rosehill,Armstrong,Boyce.

Ducks in the rumor mill … Subban-Plekanec drop the gloves … RNH injures shoulder … Carcillo could face suspension

  • Eric Stephens of the OC Register: Talk about what Teemu Selanne will do has already surfaced as the Ducks have struggled with a 10-21-6 record.

“I’ve read some stories in the papers too about what the situation could be,” said Selanne, who took the day off for maintenance. ”To be honest, I haven’t really thought about that too much. I still believe that we can make the playoffs. I don’t want to think about that thing before we’re out.

“So right now, I just think I’m going to be here. That’s the only goal I have right now. Right now, I can’t see that happening. The focus is still do the job here now and see how it goes. A lot of work to do. It’s a big challenge right now.”

Ducks GM Bob Murray may look to see what he can get for the few tradable assets he has. Bobby Ryan has already been on the trade block and Ryan Getzlaf’s name has crept into the rumor mill lately. GM Murray has already said that Selanne is retiring a Duck.

  • Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: It’s sounding like the Sabres could be shopping some players in effort to turn their season around. Coach Lindy Ruff’s job is safe. The Sabres sit in 11th spot, but they don’t need to blow up their roster. Derek Roy, Drew Stafford, Paul Gaustad and Ryan Miller haven’t lived up to expectations or their contracts.
  • TSN:  Canadiens P.K. Subban and Tomas Plekanec dropped the gloves at yesterday’s practice. No big bombs were landed and both players resumed practicing afterwards. “It’s nothing personal between me and P.K., it’s about the team and to realize we have to start playing as a team,” said Plekanec. “Those things happen.
  • Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly: Flyers winger Jaromir Jagr took himself out of yesterday’s Winter Classic after he was speared in the calf. “It was swelling and getting worse and worse in my leg,” Jagr said. “I just couldn’t skate hard and I didn’t want to just be [on the ice] to be there. I knew at that point I couldn’t help my teammates.”
  • Craig Custance of ESPN: Custance list 10 candidates for next year’s Winter Classic and beyond: 1. Detroit 2. Washington 3. New York 4. Minnesota 5. Toronto 6. Chicago 7. Colorado 8 Columbus 9. Green Bay 10. Las Vegas
  • Jim Jamieson of the Vancouver Province: Canucks forward David Booth hopes to return to the lineup by Jan. 9th against the Panthers. Booth has skated for 3 straight days, but only for 15 minutes. Booth has been out with a sprained knee ligament since Dec. 6th. Defenseman Aaron Rome also skated but is still a ways from returning.
  • Blackshawks Dan Carcillo’s hit on Oilers Tom Gilbert. This will definitely be looked by the league, and a suspension is likely. What do you think?

Monday morning notes on the Maple Leafs, Flyers, Jets, Coyotes, Canadiens, Devils, Isles, Oilers and Kings

  • Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: The Maple Leafs sent goalie Ben Scrivens to the AHL yesterday, with more cuts expected today. Matt Frattin will likely skate with Mikhail Grabovski and Nikolai Kulemin in Thursday’s opener, that’s if Grabovski is healthy enough to go. Coach Ron Wilson thinks that Grabovski will be able to go, and is hoping that Tyler Bozak and Tim Connolly can play as well. Ron Wilson has joined twitter and is following Kyle Turris. His first tweet: “Need hybrid icing rule change! Have seen too many horrific injuries!”
  • Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Teams have until Wednesday at 3 PM to submit their rosters to the NHL. The Flyers will likely only be keeping 2 of Brayden Schenn, Sean Couturier and Matt Read. Couturier could get a 10 audition with the club before they have to make a final decision on him.
  • Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press: The Jets have released forward Janne Pesonen, and sent Paul Postma and Jason Gregoire to the AHL. Contract talks between the Jets and Mark Scheifele are progressing.
  • Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: The Canadiens will get an update today on defenseman Chris Campoli. Campoli took a blow to the head on Saturday from Lightning forward Ryan Malone.
  • Chris Botta of the NY Times: Petr Sykora should find out this afternoon if he’ll receive a contract from the Devils or if he’s released by the team.
  • Jeff Marek via twitter: The Islanders assigned 17 players to Bridgeport of the AHL. 1st round pick Ryan Strome is with the team. BD Galiof via twitter: With the Islanders signing Steve Staois, it allows Calvin de Hann to continue his development in the AHL. He’s likely to get a callup when injuries arise.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: The Oilers need a puck moving defenseman, and Maple Leafs Carl Gunnarsson’s name keeps popping up. Could the Oilers be interested in Bryan McCabe? The Oilers could be without defenseman  Ryan Whitney (ankle), Ladislav Smid (shoulder) and Taylor Chorney (knee) for the opener. Smid possibly has a dislocated or separated shoulder. Same Gagner will start the season on the IR with an high ankle sprain. The Oilers have 27 guys in camp after assigning Teemu Harikainen to the AHL, and putting Ryan O’Marra, Ryan Keller, Josh Green and Gilbert Brule on waivers. Matheson wonders if Linus Omark is the team’s 3rd line RWers, or if they are taking calls for him. Omark has 5 pre-season points.

Ailing Penguins … Gagne nursing new injury … Ducks-Flyers make small trade

  • Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Sidney Crosby left practice early yesterday with an injury, same went for Chris Kunitz. Evgeni Malkin didn’t practice. “They are all dealing with some aches, pains and soreness,” Penguins coach Dan Byslma said, but they all should take the morning skate today. Though no one would say what was bothering Crosby, he been bothered by hip and groin soreness throughout the season.
  • Damian Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times: The Tampa Bay Lightning are still unsure when Simon Gagne will return to the lineup. Lots of Roster movement today … 3 teams interested in Morrison … NHL-KHL to play nice

  • Jonas Seigel of AM640: The Toronto Maple Leafs have assigned Nazem Kadri, Luca Caputi, Christian Hanson, and Jussi Rynnas to the Toronto Marlies of the AHL. John Mitchell was kept over Christian Hanson, who probably had a better camp than Mitchell. From Brian Burke,

“If you go based on the way training camp went, I think Luca and Christian could both make a real good argument that this isn’t a fair result.  They both played well, but again Luca had to knock out an incumbent—so whether that’s Freddie Sjostrom or whatever—didn’t do it in our estimation and Christian Hanson is not a guy we want playing six minutes a night. We want him to go down and play. He’s a young player, he needs to play. Same with Luca. Those two guys I think can make an argument this isn’t fair.”

Mike Zigomanis was put on waivers as well today.

  • Frank Seravalli via twitter: The Flyers have sent Johan Backlund, Bourdon, Gustafsson, Kalinski, Testwuide, Laliberte and Holmstrom to the AHL Phantoms.
