NHL Rumors II: Maple Leafs, Capitals, Predators, Selanne, Spezza, Byfuglien and Giguere

  • Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: If the Maple Leafs fire Randy Carlyle, some coaches that they may be interested in: Mike Keenan, John Hynes (Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins head coach), Peter Laviolette and Kevin Dineen. The Leafs have $49 million committed to 12 players next season, leaving about $22 million for 11 more players. Low cost players like Petter Granberg, Andrew MacWilliam, Jerry D’Amigo and Spencer Abbott could be used. That would leave about $18 million for eight players. UFAs: Dave Bolland, Nikolai Kulemin, Jay McClement, Mason Raymond, Troy Bodie and Paul Ranger. RFAs: James Reimer, Cody Franson, Jake Gardiner, Peter Holland, Carter Ashton, D’Amigo and Abbott. The Leafs could use their RFAs as trade bait. Reimer is likely gone, especially if Randy Carlyle stays. Gardiner may want $3 million a year, and could be used as trade bait for a top center.
  • Kevin Allen of USA Today: Capitals owner Ted Leonsis may not bring GM George McPhee and coach Adam Oates back. Leonsis must also look at Alex Ovechkin, is he part of the solution or part of the problem? Do they look to see if a new coach could change him or look to move him out?

It’s hard to see John Tortorella returning to the Canucks.

Randy Carlyle will likely be fired by Maple Leafs. The Leafs appear to be ready to make some major moves this offseason, with Nazem Kadri possibly the center piece of a deal.

The Predators may look at firing coach Barry Trotz. He won’t be out of work long if they let him go.

  • Chris Johnston: “I would not be surprised to see Teemu Selanne return to the NHL next year. In Sochi, he made it clear that he still has more to give.”
  • Sens Chirp: TSNs Brent Wallace on whether Jason Spezza will be back with the Senators next year, “probably not.”
  • Ken Wiebe: Jets coach Paul Maurice said that Dustin Byfuglien will start next year at forward.
  • Lisa Hillary: When asked if last night’s game against the Ducks would be his last regular season game, Avs J.S. Giguere said: ”Well I have flown in my family for the game.” Eric Stephens: When talking with Giguere a few weeks ago, Giguere said it’s most certainly it for him. Didn’t want it to get out there.
  • David Pagnotta: Sabres coach Ted Nolan: ”I’m a strong believer in laying a foundation… Timmy and I will have a good chance to reevaluate what we’ve got (this off-season).”

Morning Rumors: Canucks, Islanders, Oilers, Sabres, Ducks, Leafs, Sens, Canadiens and Avs

  • Eliotte Friedman of CBC: On the Canucks rumors:

“Canuck rumour I: That the Aquilini family forced Tortorella on Gillis. Verdict: Skeptical.”

“Canuck rumour II: That ownership blocked Gillis from trading Ryan Kesler at the deadline. Verdict: Don’t believe it.”

“Canuck rumour III: That ownership is courting Trevor Linden. Verdict: God only knows.”

The six teams that are believed to be in Ryan Kesler’s list: Ducks, Blackhawks, Avalanche, Red Wings, Penguins and Lightning. Only the Ducks and Penguins were really into trading for him at the draft.

The Islanders will have to let the Sabres know by June first if they will be sending them their first round pick this year as part of the Thomas Vanek-Matt Moulson trade.

The Islanders had targeted Sebastien Colberg with their 34th pick in 2012 but the Canadiens took him at 33. Could be one of the reasons the Islanders took the Canadiens offer over the Wild and Maple Leafs offers.

A former teammate on Steve Yzerman regarding the Martin St. Louis situation: ”I’ve seen him angry before… but never that angry.”

Rumor that the Oilers were looking hard at Sabres Tyler Myers. Getting shot down. Name may have come up, but it was determined quickly that there was not a match.

Maple Leafs GM Dave Nonis “took a hatchet” to trade rumors involving the Panthers and Nikolai Kulemin.

Wild GM Chuck Fletcher is getting a contract extension.

Quote from trade deadline: ”Want to make Bob Murray laugh? Ask him if John Gibson is available.”

Teams called the Senators about defenseman Jared Cowen.

“I believe this guy is going to be a really good player for a long time,” Murray said. “He’s lost his confidence. We’re going to send him home in the summer and start fresh next year with a new outlook. That’s all it is.”

  • Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette: Canadiens Thomas Vanek doesn’t want to talk about his pending UFA status.

“My focus is on helping the Canadiens win,” Vanek said after joining the team in Phoenix. “That’s all I’m thinking about now.”

  • Mike Chambers of the Denver Post: Avs are confident they will be able to re-sign pending UFA Reto Berra to a multi-year deal.

“We’re presently working on signing him,” Roy said, adding that he and vice president Joe Sakic would not have given up a second-round draft pick if they expected Berra would test free agency.

Avs J.S. Giguere could be leaning towards retirement.

“Not 100 percent sure, but definitely leaning that way,” he said of retirement.”You have to be honest with yourself, and (the end of the season) might be the time. But I don’t want to talk about that right now. It’s not the time or place.”

  • The Fourth Period: The Canadiens have upped their offer to Andrei Markov from one year up to two years, worth around the same as he’s making this season, $5.75 million. It is thought that Markov has been asking for a three or four year deal. Negotiations will continue, but the Canadiens may be holding firm on just two years.
  • Hope Smoke: Pierre LeBrun: ”Odd dynamic in Van. Talked to a scout yesterday who said the Canucks D group is a puck moving core & they’re playing a chip & chase”
  • Hope Smoke: Pierre LeBrun: ”Canucks told everyone that other than the twins everyone else was available? Why not trade the twins too?” … ”If you’re going to rebuild, why not sit down with the Sedins and blow it up completely?” … ”The twins have not been good since the day they signed their extension, Garrisson and Edler have been brutal. Burrows can’t score” … ”All these players are having career worst seasons. Is this just a coincidence? It goes back to talking about Tortorella”
  • Hope Smoke: Maple Leafs Claude Loiselle: ”Our hands were tied going into the deadline because of cap space” … ”We could have done something but it had to be a perfect fit and we just couldn’t find it”

Morning Hits: Forensic Investigation, Bieksa, Katz, Starting Goalies and Recalls

  • Ken Warren: Bob McKenzie is saying that Senators owner Eugene Melnyk and GM Bryan Murray were in New York  to meet with the NHL about Melnyk’s forensic investigation on Erik Karlsson’s Achilles injury last season that was caused by a Matt Cooke hit.
  • Hope Smoke: Bob McKenzie: ”Melnyk has been up front the entire time that he believes Cooke injured Karlsson intentionally and that he will prove it” …  ”I have no idea how Melnyk plans on doing so”

  • Mark Spector: Canucks Kevin Bieksa will not face supplementary discipline for his role in Saturday’s hallway incident between John Tortorella and the Flames.
  • Edmonton Oilers: Part of Oilers owner, Daryl Katz’s letter to fans:

    To Oilers Fans Everywhere:

We all thought this was going to be the year the Oilers turned the corner. Obviously, that hasn’t happened, and it hurts. It’s frustrating – for all of us. For our fans, for our players and staff, and for everyone in our community who shares a common bond around a game, a team and a city that we love.

I know this will almost certainly be the eighth consecutive year since we made the playoffs. I hate that fact as much as anyone, but the reality is that this is only year four of the rebuild that started when we drafted Taylor Hall. The good news, if you can call it that, is that other teams that committed to fundamental rebuilds went through the same kind of droughts over the same kind of time frames, or longer. That doesn’t make it fun for anyone; it just means we have to stay the course.

  • Rich Chere: Cory Schneider will start in net for the Devils against the Blues.
  • Adrian Dater via Sulia: Avs Semyon Varlamov will start tonight and on Friday. J.S. Giguere will start on Saturday.
  • Wayne scanlan: The Senators recall Stephane Da Costa from the AHL to replace the injured Mark Stone.
