Afternoon Rumors and Notes: Moulson, Kesler, Scrivens, Wings, Hawks, Waivers, Flyers, Brodeur, Bruins and Devils

  • Pierre LeBrun: Sabres Matt Moulson is not practicing today. GM Tim Murray said that Moulson hasn’t been traded.
  • Nick Kypreos: There are many people who believe that Ryan Kesler told the Canucks that he doesn’t want to play in Canada anymore if they are able to make a trade for him. He has a no-trade clause.
  • Josh Rimer: Ben Scrivens signs a two-year deal with the Oilers worth $4.6 million total according to his agent.
  • Detroit Red Wings: GM Ken Holland said that Pavel Datsyuk and Stephen Weiss won’t play tomorrow. Ansar Khan: Datsyuk is not skating today and hasn’t since leaving Thursday’s game.
  • Scott Powers: Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said that Marian Hossa will be out for two to three weeks.
  • Pierre LeBrun: On waivers today: Devan Dubnyk (NSH), Frazer McLaren (TOR), Chuck Kobasew (PIT) and Philip Larsen (EDM).
  • Hope Smoke: Leafs Claude Loiselle: ”We waived McLaren to give us some flexibility for the trade deadline”
  • Jim Matheson: The Flyers do have the assets to land Ryan Kesler. Would they do Sean Couturier or Brayden Schenn and Samuel Morin?
  • Rich Chere: Martin Brodeur: ”As of now there is nothing going on.”
  • Mark Spector: Spector keeps hearing Martin Brodeur and the Wild being linked.
  • Hope Smoke: Doug MacLean: “Here is what you have to do with Vanek. You have to entice Snow to take prospects and not the big draft picks”
  • Joe Haggerty: The Bruins are looking for a top-four defenseman for the left side. They could use depth on the right side. Dustin Byfuglien is intriguing, but he’s a right shot.
  • Rich Chere: Devils coach Pete DeBoer said that both Damien Brunner and Bryce Salvador could play on Tuesday.

Injury Notes: Stamkos, Steen, Cammalleri, Alfredsson, Maple Leafs and the Islanders

  • Shawn McKenzie: Lightning Steven Stamkos said yesterday that it was the best he’s felt. He was to have an x-ray last night to see if his leg is 100 healed. Bruce Garrioch: Stamkos still hopes to get into a game before the Olympics. He won’t go to Sochi if there is a risk. Joe Smith: Stamkos took part in all team drills yesterday.
  • Jeremy Rutherford: Blues Alex Steen left last night’s game with a lower-body injury. Coach Ken Hitchcock said ”He’s day-to-day, lower-body (injury). We’ll see where he is in a day or so. He’ll be back.”
  • Wes Gilbertson: Flames Mike Cammalleri skated on his own yesterday for the first time since suffering his concussion.
  • Bill Roose: Red Wings Daniel Alfredsson is expected to return from back spasms tonight.
  • Michael Traikos: Maple Leafs Frazer McLaren and Trevor Smith skated yesterday morning. Dave Bolland and David Clarkson didn’t skate. Hope Smoke: Dave Nonis: ”Clarkson is probably at least a week away from returning. Bolland is really tough. There is a lot of work for him to still do”
  • Arthur Staple: Injured Islanders Evgeni Nabokov and Lubomir Visnovsky skated yesterday morning, but are not ready yet. Brett Cyrgalis: Capuano of Visnovsky: “If things progress the way they’re going, he could be ready next week – I’m hoping.”
  • Arthur Staple of Newsday: Islanders Travis Hamonic (concussion) is still experience symptoms and remains out indefinitely. Evgeni Nabokov won’t come off the IR until tomorrow at the earliest.

  • Chad Graff: Wild’s Zach Parise practiced with the power play unit yesterday, a sign he could return tonight.
  • Ansar Khan of MLive: Red Wings Pavel Datsyuk is back skating but he has no idea when he’ll be able to get back into the lineup.
  • Seth Rorabaugh: Penguins Joe Vitale was seen with a cast on his right arm.
  • Eye on Hockey: Islanders Lubomir Visnovsky won’t play in the Olympics as his rehab continues.
  • David Alter: Maple Leafs David Clarkson and Frazer McLaren are eligible to be activated from the IR if they are ready.

Afternoon Hits: Oilers-Panthers trade, Klesla, Emmerton, Steen, Clarkson, Bolland, Hamonic and Lines

  • Edmonton Oilers: The Oilers trade forwards Ryan Martindale and Derek Nesbitt to the Panthers for forwards Steve Pinizzotto and Jack Combs.
  • Ansar Khan: Red Wings Corey Emmerton played in his 10th game and will now need to go through waivers if he’s sent back to the AHL.
  • Dan Rosen: The Blues have activated Alex Steen from the IR and he’ll be in the lineup tomorrow.
  • Terry Koshan: The Maple Leafs put Frazer McLaren on the IR. The Leafs also put David Clarkson on the IR. Paul Hendrick: Clarkson is out a week after having a bursa procedure on his elbow.
  • David Alter: Maple Leafs Dave Bolland skated for just under 30 minutes before practice.
  • Arthur Staple: Islanders defenseman Travis Hamonic (upper-body) returned to Long Island for further evaluation.

  • Ansar Khan: Red Wings Patrick Eaves cleared waivers and was assigned to the AHL.
  • Bob McKenzie: Canucks sign Eddie Lack to a two-year contract extension with a $1.15 million cap hit. He’ll get $1 million next year and $1.3 million the following year.
  • Terry Koshan: The Maple Leafs recall Trevor Smith and send John-Michael Liles to the AHL.
  • William DePaoli: Penguins defenseman Paul Martin will return to the lineup tonight. Kris Letang didn’t practice this morning.
  • Katie Strang: Rangers Rick Nash, Ryan Callahan and Anton Stralman all practiced today. Nash isn’t expected to play tomorrow.
  • Dan Rosen: Devils Patrick Elias said he plans to play tonight.
  • Igor Eronko: Nikolai Zherdev had his second KHL contract terminated in the last two and half months.
  • Jonas Siegel: Maple Leafs Frazer McLaren will be back in the lineup against the Sabres.
  • Ansar Khan: Red Wings Stephen Weiss (groin) was on the ice today. He’s not expected back until next week.
  • Shawn Mitchell: Blue Jackets Matt Calvert and/or Boone Jenner could return to the lineup next week.

Injury Notes: Rinne, Johnson, Jackman, Morrow, Lupul, McLaren, Helm, Lecavalier and Hartnell

  • Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: Predators goalie Pekka Rinne will be out at least four weeks after a “hip scope.” Magnus Hellberg has been recalled. Josh Cooper via twitter: Predators GM Poile said that Rinne has a spontaneous bacterial infection in the hip he had surgically repaired.
  • Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Blues Barret Jackman and Brenden Morrow are expected to return to the lineup tomorrow night against the Canucks. Morrow should be lined up with Vladimir Sobotka and Ryan Reaves on the fourth line.
  • David Alter: Maple Leafs Joffrey Lupul left practice for x-rays after taking a puck off the foot. James Mirtle: The Maple Leafs have recalled Josh Leivo for their trip in case Lupul’s injury is serious.
  • Mark Masters: Randy Carlyle said that Frazer McLaren has been cleared to play.
  • Ansar Khan of MLive: Red Wings Darren Helm won’t play this weekend, but is expected to get back in the lineup sometime during their four-game Western Canada trip that starts on Oct. 30th in Vancouver.
  • Sam Carchidi: Flyers Vincent Lecavalier is in, Scott Hartnell is out.

  • Ansar Khan: Red Wings Jordin Tootoo (bruised shoulder) skated today. Patrick Eaves is out with a sprained MCL and ankle, and hasn’t been on the ice since he suffered the injuries.

  • Ian Mendes: Senators Jason Spezza said that he has a mild strain, but wouldn’t say where the injury is. Added it’s not serious.
  • David Pollak: Sharks Raffi Torres had surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee yesterday. Will be out for three to five months.
  • Chip Alexander: Hurricanes Jeff Skinner is expected to miss the last two preseason games.
  • Josh Cooper: Predators Patric Hornqvist is day-to-day with a lower-body injury.
  • Chris Nichols: Sabres Joel Armia is out indefinitely with a broken hand.
  • Shawn Mitchell: The Blue Jackets are being cautious with Cam Atkinson as he deals with a minor injury.
  • Elliott Pap: Canucks Jordan Schroeder is wearing a ‘moon boot’ on his left foot and is using crutches.
  • David Alter: Leafs Frazer McLaren may need another evaluation on his hand. He could become a candidate for the LTIR if it will keep him out longer.
  • Mark Lazerus: Blackhawks Marian Hossa skated before practice yesterday and coach Quenneville hopes that he’s able to practice today. They are “shooting for” the season opener on Tuesday.
  • Harvey Fialkov: Panthers Sean Bergenheim has made progress but won’t play any games until he practices with the team.
  • Andrew Gross: Rangers coach Alain Vigneault confirms that Ryan Callahan has been cleared for contact. When asked if Callahan will be available for the season opener, Vigneault said “No, no, no.”

Morning Hits II: Nugent-Hopkins, Hemsky-Ott, Tatar, Belov, Giroux and McLaren

  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: Contract extension talks between the Oilers and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins are underway. An extension will likely be in the six to seven year range.
  • Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal: (mail bag) Asked if he would trade Ales Hemsky for Steve Ott. Matheson thinks the Oilers would do it, but Sabres likely wouldn’t be interested in it. Both sides would likely prefer to have the sandpaper that Ott brings.
  • Ansar Khan: Red Wings Tomas Tatar will likely make the Red Wings according to GM Ken Holland.

    “It’s an important preseason for a guy like Tats because there’s a lot of depth,” Holland said. “We got decisions to make, but he’ll probably be one of the guys that’s one of the 14 left standing because he’s young, there’s upside potential.

    “I like Tats. He plays hard, he goes to the hard areas. He wants the puck, he wants to score.”

  • Darren Dreger: Oilers Anton Belov finally had his Visa clear and arrived in Edmonton last night.
  • Chuck Gormley: Flyers Claude Giroux said that he shot the puck hard for the first time yesterday since he severed his tendons, felt fine doing so.
  • Jonas Siegel: Maple Leafs Frazer McLaren has a fractured pinky finger and will be out at least two weeks.
