  • Pierre LeBrun: “Teams continue to phone Vancouver on Alex Edler… Wasn’t a chip Canucks really looking to move that much but if price is right…”
  • Dave Isaac: “Keep in mind, teams can now go above 23 on their rosters, but have to be cap compliant until playoffs. #Flyers roughly $2.45 M under.”
  • John Vogl: “One thing to note about the Sabres and trades: @capgeek says they have reached their limit on retaining salaries, so any deal is straight-up”
  • John Vogl: “Sabres looking at ‘couple names’ on waiver wire, getting calls on 25 percent of roster, GM tells team site “

  • Craig Custance: “If Canucks get the return they’re looking for, they do have the green light from ownership to make a Kesler deal today.”
  • Spector’s Hockey: “I don’t expect #Leafs to trade James Reimer at deadline. They need him in case Bernier burns out or gets hurt down the stretch.”

  • Michael Russo: “BLOG: #mnwild talking to the Buffalo Sabres about Drew Stafford “

  • Nick Kypreos: “Hearing the Canadiens shopping Lars Eller today. Worst kept secret is Bergevin wants more size.”
  • Mark Spector: “Out of CGY, Hudler not out of play. Could help a lot of teams, esp CHI with Hossa hurt. Would love to move Wideman contract. Unlikely.”

  • Dale Lamontagne: “The New York Rangers have received several inquires regarding Brian Boyle, according to the New York Post.”
  • Rob Rossi: ” #Pens not sure if Kesler is still in play.”
  • Mark Spector: “Per @reporterchris, D Sami Vatanen being available should intrigue a lot of GMs. Also a sign ANA is clearing room for something big.”
  • Jim Diamond: “My guess is that Poile works out a deal to trade Legwand today. Whether or not he accepts it or not is a different story.”
  • David Pagnotta: “Colorado looking for veteran defenseman with term. Guys like McGinn, Parenteau among available players for a ‘hockey trade’”
  • Bruce Garrioch: “My friend Denis Potvin says Anaheim Ducks have made multiple phone calls on Jason Spezza. Still doubt he moves today.”
  • Nick Kypreos: “#Devils will try and move Brodeur. He told his GM last nite he wants out. Lou told him not great market but he’d try his best to do it.”
  • Chris Botta: “As of late last night, the Ducks, Kings and Sharks want you to believe they’re out on Vanek. That could change, of course.”
  • Pierre LeBrun: “As for any speculation about Kesler and Chicago, told by Hawks source that they are NOT in on that. Also not looking for a backup goalie”
  • Darren Dreger: “Nothing in the works, but if the Leafs do something today…it will be big or nothing. Let the Gardiner, Kadri rumours fly.”

Asking Price For Del Zotto Will Need To Come Down For Senators

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: The NHL Christmas trade freeze is now over. Senators GM Brian Murray has been working the phones over the past month. He has spoken with the Rangers several time over the past six weeks about Michael Del Zotto. The Maple Leafs, Sharks and Avalanche have been rumored to have talked with the Rangers about Del Zotto as well.

Sources say that if the Senators are to work out a deal for Del Zotto, the asking price will have to come down. The Rangers are believed to be demanding Marc Methot, but that isn’t going to happen. The Senators may be willing to move Patrick Wiercioch, who has become a healthy scratch of late.

“Del Zotto’s value has gone down,” said a league executive Friday. “He hasn’t shown any consistency and he’s not worth nearly as much as he may have been earlier in the season.”

  • Del Zotto was drafted 20th overall in the first round of the 2008 draft by the Rangers.

Garrioch’s rumor roundup … Liles on borrowed time? Whitney scratched … Clowe suspended pending hearing

  • Bruce Garrioch via twitter: Jarome Iginla and Flames haven’t had any serious contract talks. Many believe that Iginla will be traded, but GM Jay Feaster shouldn’t expect to hit a home run with the pending UFA.

“I’m just not sure what kind of impact he would make and you’re going to have to give up a lot if you are going to get him,” said one league executive. “You’re talking about prospects and draft picks. Is it worth it?”

Teams that aren’t happy right now with their play: the Avalanche, Panthers, Flyers and Jets.

There will be a lot of interest in defenseman Ran Hainsey. He plays 24 minutes a game and leads the league in blocked shots. The Jets would likely look for a 2nd round pick in return.

The Canadiens would like to find a taker for Erik Cole and his $4.5 million cap hit through next year. Garrioch suggests the Hurricanes.

If Corey Perry decides to leave the Ducks and come east as a UFA, there will be plenty of interest: Maple Leafs, Sabres, Bruins, Senators and Red Wings.

Capitals GM George McPhee is working the phones and could look to free up money by trading Troy Brouwer ($2.35 million through 2015-16), Joel Ward ($3 million through 2014-15) and Jason Chimera ($1.75 through 2013-14).

The Avalanche could be moving Ryan O’Reilly soon. The Rangers, Flyers, Maple Leafs and Hurricanes have been involved in talks. Garrioch wouldn’t be surprised if O’Reilly ended up in Carolina.

The Flyers have been looking for a defenseman, but there aren’t many available. The Flyers couldn’t find a fit with the Sharks, who have depth on the blueline. Sharks GM Doug Wilson isn’t shopping players, but he is listening to offers.

  • Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun: Koshan isn’t suggesting that Maple Leafs defenseman John-Michael Liles has played his last game in a Maple Leafs uniform, but he has been a healthy scratch for the last [four] games and could be on borrowed time. Jake Gardiner won’t be with the Marlies for much longer, and Morgan Rielly will be given a chance to make the team next year.
  • Jim Matheson via twitter: Oilers Ryan Whitney was a healthy scratch for the 5th time in the last 9 games. Something has to come to head soon.
  • David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks Ryan Clowe could be facing a suspension up to 10 games for leaving the bench with less than a minutes to go in a game against the Blackhawks to avenge a hit teammate Joe Pavelski. He was suspended pending a hearing on Monday.
