Rumors VI: Bruins, Kings, Ducks, Oilers, Pens, Sharks and Canes
  • Joe Haggerty of CSNNE: Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli has talked trade with the Blues, Sabres and even the Maple Leafs. The asking prices have been too high, but they should start to drop for players like Chris Stewart as GM Tim Murray will need to get some value for him. Bruins could also be hoping for a reduced price on a top-four defenseman and a backup goalie. Ideally they would be able to trade for a forward, top-four Dman and a backup goalie, but two of the three needs would help.

“There are a number of trades I could have made , but as a manager you look at what’s for the betterment of the organization short term, medium term and long term. You have to weigh the balances. Every other manager could say that too,” said Chiarelli. “I’m not going to just make a costly trade for the sake of making a trade.”

Antoine Vermette would be the most logical target for the Bruins. If the Bruins acquire him and are interested in re-signing him, they could look at trade pending UFA Carl Soderberg. They could look at moving a salaried player or two and then bring in players like Vermete and Keith Yandle. Moving core players like Milan Lucic, Zdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg wouldn’t enter trade talk until the summer if they decide to go down that route.

  • Craig Custance: The Kings trading for Andrej Sekera kept him from going to the Blackhawks. He would have been a good fit in Chicago.
  • Craig Custance: A GM after Sekera was traded to the Kings:  “I would be shocked if he isn’t signed to an extension.”
  • Jim Matheson: Heat is now on the Ducks after the Kings landed Sekera. They could use help on the blueline too. Can Oilers GM Craig MacTavish get a first round pick from the Ducks for Jeff Petry?
  • Mark Spector: The Penguins are still interested in Oilers Jeff Petry, but they are running out of draft picks.
  • Roger Millions: Daniel Winnik trade makes Curtis Glencross more valuable. Think the Flames can get more than what the Leafs got back.
  • Mark Purdy: (answering question) Can see Joe Thornton or Patrick Marleau waiving their no-trade clauses.
  • Chip Alexander: Hurricanes GM Ron Francis didn’t rule out trading a non-UFA by the deadline, but added “I don’t necessarily think it will be anything like that.”
  • David Pagnotta: The Hurricanes still have more trades to make. Jay McClement, Pat Dwyer and Tim Gleason are on the block.
