On the Ottawa Senators …

  • Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun: With the roster freeze approaching, Garrioch thinks that now is the time for GM Bryan Murray to make a deal. Problem being, the market is soft and it’s not easy to make a trade. Murray said on Friday that he’s talked to several teams about potential trades, but they haven’t been able to find the right fit. There are a lot of teams that are looking for defensemen.

“That’s the problem: Every team wants a defenceman and the teams that have them want to keep them. There’s not really any solutions out there,” said a league executive.

Teams are interested Jared Cowen and Patrick Wiercioch, but the Sens need to get something back that would help them now.

“I’ve talked to a number of teams. It just seems that we’re all talking to each other, we’re all trying to get one more piece or whatever but the bottom line is nothing’s happening,” Murray said Friday.

“I don’t know whether it’s because of the cap system or it’s everybody is so close we’re all afraid to make a mistake but certainly it appears more difficult now to make a trade than ever.”

On the Philadelphia Flyers …

  • Dave Isaac of the Courier0-Post: Having Mark Streit’s $5.25 million cap hit on the LTIR, has allowed the Flyers to keep Shayne Gostisbehere and his $925,000 cap hit in the lineup. Streit could be about two weeks away from returning to the lineup. If Gostisbehere is returned to the AHL, the Flyers will have about $67,000 in cap space. Gostisbehere may be playing too well to be sent down though. The Flyers need to find a way to keep him up. The Flyers may need to temporarily send Gostisbehere down to the AHL and allow Streit to show that he’s healthy and effective, and hope that teams show interest. The 38-year old Streit has one year left on his deal.
