Rumors III: Friedman’s Thoughts, Leafs, Avs and Coyotes
  • Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet: Damien Cox reported that the Leafs will start talks with Cody Franson and Mike Santorelli. It makes sense, but if a consensus on value can’t be found, they’ll be dealt. The Red Wings are looking for a right-handed defenseman and might have interest in Franson. There probably isn’t an untouchable, but some like Morgan Rielly or James van Reimsdyk will cost a lot more than others.A Dion Phaneuf for Mike Richards trade works financially. Sense is that the Kings may consider it, but the Leafs may not, at least not at this point. Phaneuf has a list of 12 teams that he can be traded too, though others could still be discussed.David Clarkson could definitely use a change of scenery. A Clarkson for Richards may work for the Leafs, but probably not for the Kings.

Talk is the Islanders and Johnny Boychuk’s agents have been trying to find common ground on a contract extension.

The Canucks and Chris Tanev are expected to start serious talks this week.

The Jets and Michael Frolik aren’t talking yet, but Frolik’s agent Allan Walsh could meet when the Jets head to Los Angeles.

Wouldn’t be surprising if Oilers forward Matt Hendricks get some interest. The Oilers may not be interested in trading him though.

Hurricanes GM Ron Francis will take one more run at re-signing Andrej Sekera and Jiri Tlusty.

  • The Fourth Period: 15 scouts took in the Maple Leafs – Hurricanes game on Monday. The Leafs have several players they are willing to trade including: Nazem Kadri, Joffrey Lupul, Cody Franson, Jake Gardiner and James Reimer. Pending UFAs in Daniel Winnik, Mike Santorelli and David Booth could be moved. They’ve been linked to Ryan O’Reilly, and could also target Mike Richards and Jordan Eberle.
  • Bill Waters: Are the Leafs a trade partner for the Avs and Ryan O’Reilly? They could be if they gave them Dion Phaneuf (retaining $1 million in salary) and a 3rd round pick for O’Reilly.
  • The Fourth Period: The Coyotes could move their pending UFAs: Antoine Vermette, Martin Erat, B.J. Crombeen, Zbynek Michalek and David Schlemko. They will also entertain offers on Keith Yandle, Martin Hanzal and Mikkel Boedker. Shane Doan will not waive his no-movement clause according to his agent. Erat has a no-movement clause. Michalek has a limited no-trade clause, listing eight teams he won’t accept a trade too.
