Afternoon Hits: Isles, Leafs, Panthers, Hawks, Devils and more
Dennis Seidenberg signed with the New York Islanders
On the New York Islanders …

Darren Dreger: The Islanders have signed defenseman Dennis Seidenberg to a one-year deal worth $1 million. The Senators were one of seven teams interested in Seidenberg. All teams wanted to wait, but the Islanders were willing to step up.

Arthur Staple: Don’t think that the Seidenberg signing is a response to a long-term Johnny Boychuk injury. The move was to just add depth to their blueline and Seidenberg can play on both sides.

On the Toronto Maple Leafs …

Lance Hornby: Jared Cowen will have his hearing against the Maple Leafs on October 19th. Cowen is saying he was still injured when the Maple Leafs tried to buy him out.

Bob McKenzie: The Maple Leafs and NHL feel he’s been bought out. The arbitrator can uphold the buyout or reverse the buyout based on the evidence presented at the hearing.

Bob McKenzie: If Cowen wins the arbitration hearing, he will get his $4.5 million salary. If Cowen loses the arbitration hearing, he will get $750,000 this year and next.

General Fanager: If Cowen is bought out, the Maple Leafs will have $2.1 million in salary cap space. If the buyout is reversed, the Leafs would be $694,084 over the salary ceiling.

On the Florida Panthers …

Darren Dreger: The Panthers are still awaiting for an official confirmation, but defenseman Aaron Ekblad is expected to get medical clearance this week.

On the Chicago Blackhawks …

Scott Powers: Duncan Keith is still day-to-day, but said his knee is feeling better.

On the New Jersey Devils …

Andrew Gross: The Devils signed defenseman Kyle Quincey to a one-year, one-way, $1.25 million contract.

Andrew Gross: Reid Boucher (hip flexor) was able to skate this morning before the main group came on the ice.

On the Dallas Stars …

Mark Stepneski: There is no update regarding Tyler Seguin’s heel injury. Coach Lindy Ruff did say that Seguin is getting close to skating.

On the Detroit Red Wings …

Ansar Khan: Tomas Nosek remains day-to-day with a knee injury. It’s not serious, but he won’t be skating for the next couple days.

On the Washington Capitals …

CSN Capitals: Tom Wilson is expected back on the ice at practice this week.
