NHL Trade: Maple Leafs Trade Jonathan Bernier To Ducks

The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded goaltender Jonathan Bernier to the Anaheim Ducks for a conditional 2017 draft pick.

Bernier was drafted 11th overall in the 1st round of the 2006 draft by the Los Angeles Kings.

Thoughts from the media …

James Mirtle: “Bernier was not included in the Andersen trade because Leafs had to pay a $2-million bonus on July 1. But that’s essentially what happened.”

** If you combine the two trades – Frederik Andersen and a conditional 2017 pick for Jonathan Bernier, Pittsburgh’s 2016 1st round pick (No. 30 Sam Steel) and a 2017 2nd round pick. **

Chris Johnston: “The #leafs paid Jonathan Bernier a $2M signing bonus on July 1, so the #ducks are only on the hook for $2.15M in actual salary this season.”

James Mirtle: “The Babcock-Bernier relationship was never going to last another season.”

David Alter: “With so many signing bonuses in NHL contracts now a days, you are going to see a lot of these style trades/moves in the future.”
