Morning Hits: Lower Cap Next Year Than Projected, Schenn and Kassian Suspension Video

  • Helene Elliott of the LA Times: Kings GM Dean Lombardi said that he was told that next seasons salary cap that was initially projected to be around $71 million, may now be closer to $68 million due to the weakening Canadian dollar.

“We found out, to our chagrin and surprise the other day, we had been told the cap was going to be $71 [million] and now with the Canadian dollar having tanked, that the cap could be as low as $68 [million]. That’s a huge swing,” Lombardi said. “So that’s more of the talks with our three guys, Mitchell, Lewis and Greene, who we’d all like to bring back. That’s more of a hindrance than anything we acquired today. “

  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger: ”Schenn has picked it up since then but JVR has developed into the Leafs’ most consistent forward. Very lopsided trade” … ”There was talk inside the Flyers camp earlier this year that Luke Schenn couldn’t play in the NHL”

Elliott Pap: Tortorella can return on Feb. 3rd against the Red Wings.

Wes Gilbertson: Colin Campbell on Hartley: “We are holding Mr. Hartley responsible for the actions of Flames’ right wing Kevin Westgarth, who took the game’s opening face-off and attempted to instigate a premeditated fight with an unwilling opponent.”

Bruins Shawn Thornton Will Be Appealing His 15 Game Suspension

  • Stephen Whyno: Shawn Thornton’s agent confirms that he’ll be appealing the 15 games suspension.
  • Eric Macramalla: “NHLPA likely felt strategically was a good idea to appeal even though their case is not strong; need to show fight while seeking precedent” … “And yes neutral arbitrator has wide discretion including increasing length of suspension (although highly unlikely)” … “This wasn’t just Shanahan’s suspension;was league suspension given complexity of case/legal implications; so unlikely Bettman will reduce.”
  • John Shannon: “So…here’s one for you…NHLPA say the Neutral Arbitrator cannot increase Thornton’s suspension…and the NHL says he can increase it.”
  • Hope Smoke: Bob McKenzie on TSN Radio: ”Thorton’s reps can bring up the Walker on Ward & Emery on Holtby incidents in appeal. Both players weren’t suspended.”
  • 67Sound: “McKenzie is absolutely right. This is where the NHL’s hypocrisy on unwilling combatants comes back to bite them.” … “Basically Thornton combined into one nasty package a bunch of scummy things the NHL has looked the other way for individually.”
