NHL Rumors: Washington Capitals and the Minnesota Wild
The Washington Capitals will meet with Justin Willams this week ... Marco Scandella on the move?
On the Washington Capitals …

Darren Dreger: Pending free agent winger Justin Williams will meet with Capitals management this week to see if there is still a fit. It’s 50/50 that he’ll be back with the Capitals next season.

Isabelle Khurshudyan: (commenting on Dreger’s tweet) GM Brian MacLellan did say that the Capitals probably wouldn’t be signing any of the their UFAs other then T.J. Oshie.

Isabelle Khurshudyan: The Capitals and GM MacLellan loved Williams but the Capitals have five restricted free agents they need to re-sign and don’t have a lot of salary cap space.

Darren Dreger: Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner is generating interest. He’s had calls from several teams and will visit some later this week.

JJ Regan: (asked about trading goaltender Philipp Grubauer for a defenseman) The Jets and Flyers definitely could use a goalie with the Avalanche, Sabres, Islanders and Canucks as possibilities.

On the Minnesota Wild …

Michael Russo of the Star Tribune: The Minnesota Wild didn’t move a defenseman over the weekend, but indications are a trade could be coming soon. Marco Scandella seems the most likely to move.

GM Chuck Fletcher has made some calls to pending free agents – mostly fourth liners and centers. They are also looking for a goalie to battle Alex Stalock to backup Devan Dubnyk.

The Wild do only have around $12.5 million in cap space with 16 players signed.

They could also be looking for a left winger and may have interest in Chris Kunitz, Matt Hendricks and Scottie Upshall. Some fourth-line center options could be Brian Boyle, Nate Thompson and Dominic Moore.

Matt Cullen would likely return to Pittsburgh if he decides to play next year, but maybe he’d consider playing in his hometown again.

Goalie options could include Mike Condon, Anders Nilsson, Chad Johnson, Jonathan Bernier, Steve Mason and Antti Niemi.

The Wild are only interested in re-signing Christian Folin if it’s a two-way contract.

Roman Polak and Dan Girardi could be options for the Wild if they don’t re-sign Folin and are looking for rugged, right handed defensemen.
