On the San Jose Sharks …

Kevin Kurz: Sharks GM Doug Wilson on the contract extension talks with Martin Jones and Marc-Edouard Vlasic: “making progress, but still some work to be done.”

Curtis Pashelka: Wilson isn’t saying if they’ll protect 7-3-1 or 8-1 for the expansion draft. It leaves the door open for potential trades.

L.A. Lariviere: Hearing that teams have contacted the Sharks about UFAs Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau. If they are left unprotected, the Vegas Golden Knights are able to negotiate with them.

Kevin Kurz: GM Wilson on Joe Thornton’s rehab and the future of Thornton and Patrick Marleau.

“Well, first of all, Jumbo is doing extremely well. He’s been in here every day, looks really good. I don’t think there’s any doubt that he’ll be ready and fit to start the season. The work that he’s put in already, that’s pure Jumbo. He loves the game. I see him every day here at the rink.

“As far as the negotiations, some of it depends on where the overall cap number is going to be, and obviously identify – there are some other key contracts that I have to try and get in place. As far as both Patty and Jumbo, we’ve had some dialogue. That will continue and remain private.”

On the Toronto Maple Leafs …

Maple Leafs Hot Stove: Darren Dreger on TSN 1050 on the Toronto Maple Leafs. Dreger thinks it might take something like six years at $6 million a season for a William Nylander extension. On what it would cost to acquire a defenseman.

“If Toronto is going to acquire a defenceman — and they still feel they should add to their blue line — what is the piece? Who are the pieces they’re going to use? Even from an age perspective, and contractually, it’s going to be James van Riemsdyk or Tyler Bozak or pieces like that. We can stop — and should’ve stopped long ago — if we’re talking about William Nylander and the younger guys.”
