New York Islanders and Detroit Red Wings
On the New York Islanders …

Rory Boylen of Sportsnet: With the NY Islanders firing Jack Capuano earlier this week, assistant coach Doug Weight takes over in the interim head coach. Six potential candidates to take over on a full-time basis: Doug Weight, Gerard Gallant, Brent Thompson, Bob Hartley, Adam Oates and Luke Richardson.

Kevin Allen of the USA Today: Islanders GM Garth Snow on if he thinks he could be the next one fired.

“I don’t even worry about that,” Snow said. “I just worry about what I have to do on a day-to-day basis, whether it is preparing for a draft, being a support system for players, coaches or trainers.”

Snow on how much of their collapse this season is his responsibility.

“One hundred percent. I don’t think there is a player on our roster that I haven’t had a hand in drafting, picking up on off waivers, or (acquired through a) trade or free agent signing. Same with the staff. Obviously I’m not hiding from the fact that it starts from me.”

On the Detroit Red Wings …

Nicholas Cotsonika of NHL.com: Red Wings GM Ken Holland will remain patient with regards to them potentially becoming sellers by the trade deadline. He will wait until the until the last possible moment.

“I want to give our team every opportunity to try to play our way into the mix,” Holland said.

If the Wings decide to be sellers, they could look to move their pending free agents: Thomas Vanek, Drew Miller, Steve Ott and Brendan Smith.

Vanek would likely get the Red Wings the greatest return.

“I like it here,” Vanek said. “I enjoy my time here. I like the guys. My family likes it here. So obviously I’m hoping to put a good streak here together to get ourselves back in the picture so I can be here. But obviously I understand the business side of it. … If I’m moving, I’m getting pretty good at that too.”
