NHL Rumors: Draft Pick Compensation and Trade Talk
Frederik Andersen and Jacob Trouba

On Draft Pick Compensation …

General Fanager: The Maple Leafs will not be providing their 2016 3rd round pick as compensation for hiring Mike Babcock or Lou Lamoriello. Therefore, the Red Wings will get the Maple Leafs 2017 3rd round pick and New Jersey will get the Maple Leafs 2018 3rd round pick.

Michael Augello: With the Sharks making the Final, the Leafs recouped a 2018 3rd round pick. Condition on the James Reimer trade was a 3rd round pick instead of a 4th if they made the Final.

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet: The Coyotes will get the 53rd overall pick as compensation for not signing 2014 draft pick Conner Bleackley. Bleackley was acquired at the deadline from the Avalanche in the Mikkel Boedker trade.

Elliotte Friedman: The Blue Jackets won’t give up their 2nd round pick to the Canucks this year for hiring head coach John Tortorella. They still have to more years to send the Canucks the pick.

On Trade Talk …

Chris Nichols of Today’s Slapshot: Bob McKenzie on TSN 690 on if there are a lot of talks between general managers right now.

“I would certainly think so. I don’t think there’s any question about that. Some of what we’re wondering about is kind of clouded by not knowing if there’s going to be an expansion draft in a year, and what impact that’s going to have.

“But even quite aside from that, absolutely there are lots and lots of teams looking at doing some significant things. We know because they’re said so. The Edmonton Oilers feel the need to make some significant change. I think the Colorado Avalanche are very interested in going out and finding a defenseman. Anaheim is a team with a huge number of question marks in terms of personnel decisions that need to be made. Are they going to trade a goaltender? Is it going to be Andersen? Is it going to be Gibson? Are they going to be able to sign both Lindholm and Vatanen on the blueline, or are they going to trade one of those guys?

“You’ve got all sorts of teams looking to at doing all sorts of things. Some of them are going to be really significant. You’ve got a lot of interesting contracts that need to be taken care of. Tyson Barrie in Colorado. Jacob Trouba with the Winnipeg Jets. A lot of these contract negotiations could also impact whether players become available in trades or not.”
