On the Detroit Red Wings …

Helene St. James: Henrik Zetterberg and Niklas Kronwall won’t be practicing with teammates while in Traverse City. They will skate on their own.

Ansar Khan: Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said that Tomas Jurco (back surgery) likely won’t be ready to return until November.

Ansar Khan: Teemu Pulkkinen is skating today, but he wasn’t been cleared for full contact.

On the Toronto Maple Leafs …

Lance Hornby: Maple Leafs GM Lou Lamoriello on injured goalie Frederik Andersen: “He’s progressing. We’re not going to rush things.” Andersen is on target to start the season.

Michael Augello: Leafs GM Lamoriello said that Joffrey Lupul (stomach muscle surgery) was rehabbing this offseason and pain resurfaced. He wasn’t able to pass his physical.

Alec Brownscombe of Maple Leafs Hot Stove: Leafs GM Lamoriello on Lupul.

“As you know, Joffrey, in the middle of February, had surgery and missed the rest of the season and has been in rehab all summer. Once we had thought there was a chance of getting back on the ice, he did so. He got on the ice and he had the same discomfort. We brought him back and he saw our doctors and he went through the physical. We both felt that he wouldn’t be able to play. He’s very disappointed. He worked very hard at it this summer. I know a lot of you have tried to reach out to him because he and I have been in communication.”

Chris Johnston: Lupul released a statement yesterday through the Maple Leafs.

“It is with deep regret that I will be unable to attend training camp and start the season with the Leafs due to injury. I pledge to work hard with a view to return to playing this season.

Hockey is the only life I have known. This is an extremely emotional time for me. Accordingly, I will not be making any further comment at this time.”
