On the Winnipeg Jets …

  • Tim Campbell of the Winnipeg Free Press: The Jets have three big pending free agents – UFAs in Dustin Byfuglien and Andrew Ladd and RFA Jacob Trouba.A league and player source on what they are asking for …Andrew Ladd – six years and at least $41 million. Which would be a $6.83 million cap hit

Dustin Byfuglien – eight years at $55 million. Which would be a $6.875 million cap hit

Jacob Trouba – eight years more than $56 million. Which would be a $7 million cap hit

Contract extension talks between the Jets and Ladd were more frequent earlier than they have been recently. There has been some talk with Byfuglien recently. The Jets and Trouba have agreed to wait until the season is over.

The Jets will also need re-sign Mark Scheifele, Adam Lowry and Michael Hutchinson.

  • Elliotte Friedman: Had heard similar numbers on Ladd (using Ryan Kesler’s contract) and Trouba (using Drew Doughty contract). Wasn’t aware that Byfuglien had gone that far.
  • Elliotte Friedman: Trouba’s agent Kurt Overhardt on the report: “The information abut Jacob is incorrect. Incorrect.”
  • Elliotte Friedman: Ladd’s and Byfuglien’s agents declined to comment on the report. Talk is there has been some positive movement on a Ladd extension, but nothing is imminent.

On the Pittsburgh Penguins …

  • Wes Crosby of NHL.com: After trading Rob Scuderi to the Blackhawks for Trevor Daley, Penguins GM Jim Rutherford doesn’t see them making any trades in the foreseeable future.

“Not right now,” he said. “I’d like to give Mike a little time with this group, see how it settles in, then we’ll take a look at it. But one of the things with making the move with the coaching change was making it when we did, it gives us enough time to make other adjustments if necessary. I don’t think we need to. I think our team is pretty good, but we have to get a few breaks around the net and score some goals.”
