NHL Rumors IV: Seven Centers, Sharks, Thornton and Phaneuf

  • Rory Boylen of The Hockey News: Boylen looks at seven centers and the most likely destination for each.1. Jason Spezza – Ducks as the likely destination. 2. Joe Thornton – staying in San Jose. 3. Ryan Kesler – ending up in Pittsburgh. 4. Paul Stastny – re-signing with the Avalanche. 5. Sam Gagner – could end up in Florida. 6. Mike Richards – remaining in LA. 7. Brad Richards – ending up in New Jersey with an honorable mention to Washington.
  • David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News: Sharks GM Doug Wilson,

    “We’re a tomorrow team.”

“This is a phase that this organization has never gone into in the past, and maybe should have many years ago,” Wilson said.

The rebuild in San Jose should be a shorter process as they already have some young skilled players in Logan Couture, Joe Pavelski and Marc-Edouard Vlasic. Wilson said talks with Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau will remain private. Wilson said other players will have decisions as well.

  • Hope Smoke: Doug MacLean: “I, for some reason, have a funny feeling that Phaneuf ends up in SJ” … “SJ is desperate to make some moves, I keep hearing Thornton could end up in NY & Dion will end up in SJ” … “SJ have left Boyle out and they want to redo their defense.” … “They have that Olympian [Vlasic] and are putting Burns back on the back end” …  “If Larry [Robinson] is there and coaching Dion & you have Vlasic as 1, Burns as 2 & Dion as 3. I know it’s too much $, but it would be a perfect scenario for him to slide in and be a fit.””
  • David Pagnotta: “All this Joe Thornton trade talk is cute… but it’s not happening. Barring a HUGE change, he’s not moving. He’ll be back in SJ next season.”

Bizarre that he (Wilson) is hanging Thornton and Marleau out to dry…

Not really when you think of it , the sharks are pavelski’s a d couture’s , it’s time to move on from the Thornton and marleau “duo” or leadership . The sharks are heading in a different direction , it’s about time after 8 years of being a great season team , but not a playoff team , San Jose is already full of over achieving player’s alone , but really doesn’t have too many players that have been on a over achieving team at the level of Chicago , Detroit , los Angeles . So what I’m suggusting is San Jose should look to the red wings for a winger that can fill the hole left by havlat cause he’s not returning , and trade Thornton to Detroit for Johan franzen , Justin abdelkater , and a first or second round pick , and as for marleau , I would trade him to Carolina for cam ward , or send him to st Louis for Patrick Berglund or Vladimir Tarasenko

Why did Doug Wilson sign both marleau and thornton to new 3 year deals before the end of the playoffs?

Marleau and Joe both signed at a lower market value to stay and play together in San Jose in hopes of winning a championship. The GM made a mistake and should have waited until after the playoffs before striking a deal. Martin Havlat? terrible move by Doug Wilson..pulling Nemo terrible decision my the coach. In my mind GM Doug Wilson should be on the move out and not your two best players.

I hope San Jose keeps Joe and Marleau and they win the cup next season!!!

Tarasenko has Taylor Hall and Duchene like value…

What !!! Tarasenko couldn’t hold Taylor Halls jock strap , when did tarasenko win a memorial cup ! ? And if hall was on the blues he would be a 100 point player , and he would give them a better shot at winning a cup then tarasenko does or ever would , just look at halls Jr stats with the spitfires ;) , Ya San Jose will win the cup next year !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lol what a joke , Thornton and marleau don’t win cups , simple as that , and Wilson signed Thornton and marleau so he could get something more for them as oppose trading them at deadline , instead as putting them in the market as rental players , think about it , are they more valuable if they have expiring contracts? , or signed so the team getting them knows that they’ll have them for a couple seasons and can actually do something and use them as an asset , then San Jose could get players they can build around pavelski and Couture. learn hockey and not NHL14 .

Marleau to Detroit, Thornton to St. Louis is more realistic. Etheir way, both have full NMC, so they pretty much control their own fate.

Pavelski doesn’t score 25 goals next year without Big Joe…this is starting to look like the Canucks all over again. Yikes, I might have to stop cheering for the sharks and jump to the Oilers if they trade their top two pieces. Time will tell.
