NHL Rumors I: Kypreos, MacLean, Ferraro and Dreger Talk Maple Leafs

  • Hope Smoke: Nick Kypreos: “If I look at the Leafs I say Kessel, Bozak, JVR, Phaneuf, Bernier and Rielly are safe and everyone else can be moved” … “When you’re locked into some of these long-term deals it makes it very difficult to improve. Could be a long process here in TO”
  • Hope Smoke: Doug MacLean: “If you get a #1 C & a #1 D then the Leafs have the making of a good team. There’s a reason guys like Dion & Phil were traded here” … “There are warts on these players and that’s why they became available”
  • Hope Smoke: Ray Ferraro: “#1 priority for the Leafs is a big Centre.”
  • Hope Smoke: Doug MacLean: “Bieksa is no doubt available and he’s a guy who could come to Toronto and make a difference”
  • Hope Smoke: Doug MacLean: “Is Bolland coming back? I keep hearing rumblings he’s going to Florida”
  • Hope Smoke: Ray Ferraro: “If Nonis fires Carlyle his replacement is probably his last hire. Think it’s more likely goes with someone he’s more familiar with” … “Would Nonis look at a guy like Dineen? Who’s the next hot young coach? It used to be Cooper & Boucher” … “I’d think John Stevens and Davis Payne are guys that get interviewed for top jobs shortly”
  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger: “I think there is enough evidence to suggest and I believe Carlyle will lose his job”

Leafs #1 priority shouldn’t be a #1 centre. That should be #2 priority in terms of personel. Priority 1 should be getting a #1D. If the Leafs had the choice between a John Tavares and a Drew Doughty, a Drew Doughty would help them a lot more. And no, there is ZERO chance either of these guys become available it’s just an example.

I also think that despite the fact that Phaneuf isn’t as bad as some make him out to be, he’s not a #1 d man and he’s not a good captain. If Phaneuf was making 4 mil per year as a #3 or #4 d man and wasn’t the captain I’d say keep him for sure. He needs to be moved to change the culture and the Leafs better hope they can replace his minutes.

Letting Bolland, Kulemin, and Ranger walk and trading Reimer/Franson for picks or prospects would free up nearly 12 million dollars in cap space added to the 2 million coming from the tucker/armstrong buyouts coming off the books.

That’s 14 million dollars to re-sign Gardiner and maybe Raymond, some cheap RFAs like Ashton, D’Amigo and Holland, sign a UFA backup on the cheap (most serviceable guys go for a mil) and then probably have a good 8-10 million to sign a d man or make a trade to bring in some salary.

The key is getting the right guys. Risky moves for guys like Clarkson need to be avoided big time.
