The Avalanche Sign Semyon Varlamov to Contract Extension

The Colorado Avalanche have signed goaltender Semyon Varlamov to a five-year contract extension worth $29.5 million, a $5.9 million salary cap hit.

The 25-year old Varlamov was drafted 23rd overall in the 2006 draft by the Capitals. He carries a $2,833,333 cap hit this season.

“Undoubtedly, Semyon has been an impact player for us this season,” said Avalanche Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Joe Sakic. “At only 25 years old, he is entering the prime years of his career and he wants to be part of this franchise moving forward. We are very excited to have come to terms with him and the fact that he has agreed to a five-year extension demonstrates his commitment to the Avalanche and what we’re trying to accomplish.”

Do you think it is a good deal for the Avalanche, Varlamov or both?

Have a feeling Colorado will be looking to get out of this contract in a couple of years. Lot of money and years for a guy that has had one half of a good season.
