VIDEO: SportsNet HC Trade Tracker: Oilers Ales Hemsky

Hockey Central panel discusses whether the Edmonton Oilers should trade Ales Hemsky. The 30-year old Hemsky will be a UFA at the end of the season. He carries a $5 million salary cap hit.

Shannon thinks Hemsky could fill a scoring third line winger spot on contending team. Shannon thinks the Red Wings are a possible destination, with Neil Smith suggesting the Sharks.

Who do you think should go after Hemsky, and what should they give up for him?

i just don’t see how the wings can pull off any trade like this. they can’t take on more than 500k in salary. prospects and draft picks don’t make $, young guys make very little, anyone with a salary won’t be moved because it does nothing for the oilers (samuelsson, bertuzzi, weiss) or nothing for the wings (franzen, howard, ericsson, kronwall). the only conceivable way I can think of is if the wings give up a shitload of prospects and edmonton pays a large portion of hemsky’s contract. which is not gonna happen for a UFA rental! I can’t even see the wings giving up nyquist or tatar or jurco for UFA hemsky straight up, w hemsky’s salary paid for. nor could i see them giving up a couple griffins for him.

Yet another rumor with the Red Wings that will never happen, unless it’s Samuelsson and Bert for Hemsky. Go ahead. Make that trade! The Wings definitely can’t take any salary on. The only way I can see a trade happening for Hemsky is if he’s included in a deal with Justin Schultz and maybe a Wings goalie like Mrazek goes to the Oilers. The Wings need a right handed D-Man, especially on the PP, but I don’t think he is the answer they want or are looking for. The Wings have a lot of salary coming off the books for next year, but they have Riley, Tatar, Glendening, and DeKeyser to take care of. They will still have some cash after that to make a signing or some moves. As much as I can’t stand Franzen, he’s pretty damn affordable, but I have a feeling he’s the type of player who’s production is just going to drop off the face of the earth at some point. Yet another stupid mention of Detroit in a rumor. Hemsky is THE LAST thing the Wings need right now, unless, again, it allows the Wings to swindle some salary off their roster.

Hemsky is one of the most overrated players in the NHL. He doesn’t score or play much D
He is often injured and not even worth a 3rdround pick…especially with that crazy high contract. His name has surfaced for the past 3 trade deadlines… with no one stupid enough to take him. He had 23 goals in 1 season, 5 years ago. Since then he has fallen off the map.

The question w/ the wings needs to be whether they’re willing to miss the playoffs for one season. As someone who lives in Detroit, I know they don’t make money unless they’re playing post-season hockey. However, if I’m Edmonton, and depending on the status of Sam Gagner, I’d target Weiss and one of the many young defenders (Smith, Kindl, etc.) or [possibly] Quincey, tack on a guy like Nick Schultz going from Edmonton (eat some salary as well) and you have a win/win trade.
