Morning Rumors: Leafs, Canadiens, Devils, Avs, Rangers, Ducks, Senators and Top Trade Targets

  • Damien Cox of the Toronto Star: Cox thinks the Maple Leafs are done trading until the deadline unless there are more injuries. Despite the trade rumors, Cox doesn’t think Nazem Kadri is any more available now than he was at the start of the season. If they are offered a young center in return, they would listen.
  • Craig Custance of ESPN: (mailbag) The Canadiens would match any offer sheet for P.K. Subban as they have money and cap space. Custance doesn’t see the Devils having motivation to trade Jaromir Jagr at the trade deadline. Without their first round pick from the Ilya Kovalchuk punishment, they will push for a playoff spot.
  • Adrian Dater: Hearing that the Rangers have asked the Avalanche about Tyson Barrie.
  • Darren Dreger: With the Rangers in Toronto, you can expect Michael Del Zotto’s agents (Newport) to meet with management to discuss the Rangers efforts to trade him. Nothing official has been planned, just convenient since they are in town.
  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger: “It hasn’t been the right fit though for him so far. Any team that is looking for a little extra playoff boost should look at Briere.”
  • Scott (@Wham_City): Elliotte Friendman on the radio on Wednesday talking about Brian Burke and Bobby Ryan

Brian Burke has had something with Bobby Ryan for a long time. A few years ago before Luke Schenn was traded for James van Riemsdyk, I heard a rumour that they were going to trade Luke Schenn to Anaheim for Ryan. And in history, it made kind of sense because that’s the player they kind of got, a scorer. And so I looked into it, and somebody who would know told me “there is no freaking way Brian Burke is making that trade because he hates Ryan, never liked him, didn’t want to draft him and wanted Jack Johnson instead.” So, I went to check on it and I was told no, and I never went with it. It was probably going to go in one of my 30 Thoughts blogs or something, and I couldn’t prove it. And today or actually last night after the team got announced and those articles appeared online as I was driving back to my hotel from Ann Arbor, I got a call from the guy who told me that, and he was like “see? I told you, never doubt me.”

  • Frank Provenzano of ESPN: (Dec. 26th) Top trade targets. Scoring Forwards: Marian Gaborik (CBJ), Matt Moulson (BUF) and Thomas Vanek (NYI). Potential teams looking for scoring forwards are: Kings, Canucks, Canadiens, Rangers and Wild. Two-way/Playoff grit forwards: Steve Ott (BUF), Vernon Fiddler (DAL) and David Legwand (NSH). Potential teams looking for two-way forwards are: Penguins, Lightning, Hurricanes, Maple Leafs and Red Wings. Top-four defenseman: Cody Franson (TOR), Dmitry Kulikov (FLA) and Stephane Robidas (DAL). Potential teams looking for a top-four defenseman: Capitals, Avalanche, Coyotes, Hurricanes and Flyers. Goaltenders: Ryan Miller (BUF) and Martin Brodeur (NJ). Potential teams looking for a goalie are: Penguins, Blues and Capitals.

this is why the leafs suck. you have a good young player in Kadri hes what 21 years old? and u want to trade him for someone 5 years older then him. You guys must be hitting the same pipe as your mayor in toronto. anyways GO HABS GO! dont trade your picks continue the rebuild. habs have 7 playes in the world juniors and they look great.

A great trade for Toronto would be a trade for a player that has all around two way game skill, someone that can win a lot of face-offs and lay the body down low that player is Zach smith from the Ottawa senator. Zach sm i th is the perfect fit be cause he has experience in the same as toronto as well is 5 years of age older then nazem kadri.

We might be a little shorter but last time I checked we’re higher up in the standings

What with Bernier starting every game, and all of the issues between Carlyle and Reimer, I thought this trade might work:
    To Calgary: Reimer and 1st/2nd
    To Toronto: Monahan and Berra/Ramo

Sigh. This kind of thinking (Trade Kadri for an older player) is what caused the Leafs to trade 24 year old Alex Steen to St. Louis for a then 26 year old Lee Stempniak. Steen ended up being one of the best two way forwards in the NHL while Stempniak sputtered out into nothing.

Sam Gagner? Sam Gagner is a terrible hockey player. Small, not tough, doesn’t put up numbers, terrible defensively and doesn’t win face-offs. Why would the Leafs trade Kadri for somebody older and worse?

Zack Smith? Really? a 25 year old 3/4 liner for a 23 year old who was almost a point per game last year and is nowhere near his prime?

Who cares how many of their own draft picks the Leafs have? When the Bruins won the Cup, only 5 of 23 were their own picks. The Leafs started drafting and developing seriously in 2008 (keeping and acquiring draft picks instead of trading them away). Six years is not long enough to build an entire team through the draft. Kadri and Rielly look to be solid while guys like Percy, Finn, Connor Brown etc. are all doing well in the minors/junior but they were only drafted between 1 and 3 years ago. If you think 3 years or so is too long to develop prospects, tell that to Ken Holland.

Here’s what the Leafs should do with Kadri:

Wait. Commit to developing the player over a long period of time. He’s already shown high end NHL level offensive skills. Give him another 3 or 4 years…he’ll be 26 or 27. If he’s still making the same mistakes then sure, get rid of him.

I’m so sick of Leaf fans wanting to trade everybody every time the team hits a rough patch as if some saviour is going to come in and fix their problems. Their problems are TEAM defence and TEAM offence 5 on 5. They’ll have to fix it as a team. The good news is that they are the 3rd youngest team in the NHL so they should get better.

I agree with giving Kadri a couple of more years to develop into the player we saw out of him last year.
Despite the year being a shortened season, he showed some potential in the scoring department.

I see the comments floating around about Braydon Schenn. I wish the Leafs could have drafted him, when they still had his brother, but anyway.

I think he would be a great acquirement, since he seems like a pretty hard nosed, aggressive young forward.

Who really knows what the Leafs need, but the way this year is going, it seems like they could use some more backup in the defence department. I find too many nights the D is hanging our goalies out to dry.

How can you blame the goalies when that is happening.

I think maybe one more defence man and maybe a top two forward is what they should be looking for. Just my opinion though.

    What will the canucks do?

  15. #15 by Adam at January 5th, 2014

Kadri to Calgary Cammalari to Toronto

  16. #16 by OilersSuck at January 5th, 2014

Stop putting Gagner in trade proposals. Toronto does not want your crap.

  17. #17 by Chuk at January 5th, 2014

But everyone wants the mighty Kadri?

  18. #18 by LeafsTossSalad at January 5th, 2014

Heres a trade for ya Rick Nash to canadians for Subban. The Nash experiment in ny has failed,Montreal has issues paying subban,If the rangers eat some of nash”s contact

  20. #20 by Cody at January 6th, 2014

The Stars have given up 12 goals in the last two games. Miller to Dallas perhaps?

  21. #21 by Cody at January 6th, 2014

My take on the Leafs: I get the sense that the Leafs orginization is not too fond of Kadri. Also, what’s new with talks for Reimer

  22. #22 by Justin Large at January 9th, 2014

I think I got a few great trades to consider right well here me out oilers are wanting basically to build there roster just like the leafs young franchise well I’d be willing to do this since a few trade predictions of mine came true case in point jvr trade and bernier trade . So basically with the oilers guys nugent hHopkins and yakupov u can easily get them for a low costing price say u trades gardener to these oilers he. Is conisdered silver stick so basically a young veteran and oilers seem to want youth to thier line up so u give them him and in return for yakupov or Hopkins even throw in a draft pick of two thirds it think it would work why not right there not losing a whole lot and they got players to compensate s well as you would be dumping salary. P.s hockey central guys folllow my trade rumors

  23. #23 by Justin Large at January 9th, 2014

As for a James rhiemer trade it would be very difficult due to the following . He’s not really stepping up his game since his last concusion so potential and value would probably be around B- to B not the greatest so think what you would get for him maybe 3 rd draft pick or 2 line forward if you add on a conditional pick asides from that you won’t get much
