Maple Leafs Sign Dion Phaneuf To Seven Year Deal

The Maple Leafs have signed Dion Phaneuf to a seven year contract extension worth $49 million, a $7 million salary cap hit.

Do you like this deal for the Leafs? Is the money too much? Is it too much term or are both too much?

I don’t get it!! A career +14 in regular season play. Think about that, he’s plus 13 right now, so his career before this CONTRACT year was +1. He’s a career minus 18 in the playoffs including a minus 6 last year against the Bruins, -2 in game seven. Game winning goals in the playoffs 0. Game winning goals in 639 regular season games 25. That’s 1 GWG every 25 ½ games. Giveaways this yr 30, career 490 in 639 games. A real difference maker! All he does is eat minutes.

I heard that guy plays for the Leafs. Aren’t they a terrible team? And isn’t he a defenseman? Those guys aren’t required to score points like that Crosby fella, aren’t they?

Guys, you have to look at his +/-, it’s the best way to tell if someone is good defensively!

+/- is an almost useless stat.

The bottom line is the Leafs have no one through can replace his minutes, there are no pending UFA defencemen this summer that are anywhere near as good and quite frankly given that he plays a tonne of minutes against the toughest competition of any defenceman in the NHL he’s doing a pretty good job for half the money that Shea Weber gets.

I_am_I you have NO CLUE about hockey, +/- is a VERY big deal!

+/- is a team stat, bad teams have minus players. You’re better off using on/off ice save percentage for a defenceman, you can compare his +/- to the rest of the team and that would be okay too (say if he were – on a + team…). It might be bad for Phaneuf, I didn’t bother to look. You can do the legwork because I’m okay with the contract relative to others in the league.

I feel, given the fact that the leafs don’t have any prospects to replace him immediately, 7 mil MIGHT be a fair deal to make sure he sticks around. However, the term is way too long. He should not be our captain. He blunders more than Liles does (shame to see him leave town). With that contract, it will be very difficult to trade him, and we should not have committed to the kind of deal we did. I feel +- is an important stat, especially for defensemen, but more important are his giveaways. You do not want the leader of your team to be the guys giving the puck away every ten seconds. Drop him to third line for a bit and see if he smartens up.

Term seems bad until you realize that in year 7 the cap will be pushing $100,000,000 and the contract won’t seem so bad. Remember Chara, Weber and Suter are all signed until they are 40, at least this one ends at 36 :-)

    You know NOTHING about hockey!
