Morning Rumors: Sedin’s, Islanders, Miller, Emelin, Phaneuf, Reimer, Oilers, and Flames

  • The Fourth Period: Two sources saying the Islanders are looking to improve their blueline. They could be looking for a replacement for the injured Lubomir Visnovsky, but one source said they aren’t looking for a short-term fix.
  • Insider Trading TSN: LeBrun: There is no real market for Sabres Ryan Miller right now. Sabres GM Darcy Regier said on Monday that there is absolutely nothing going on with regards to Miller. LeBrun thinks that if the Blues Jaroslav Halak isn’t playing well or if he gets injured, the Blues could be a team to watch.McKenzie: The Canadiens could get a deal done with pending free agent defenseman Alexei Emelin soon.

LeBrun: No exchange of numbers between the Maple Leafs and Dion Phaneuf has taken place. They had a quick meeting last week to sort of times for future talks. LeBrun doesn’t think the Leafs are comfortable going higher than $7 million. Phaneuf’s agents will likely ask for eight years, Leafs more comfortable around six.

  • Bob McCown: “If Reimer to Oilers deal is going to happen it has to be in the next couple of weeks. At the trade deadline will be too late for Edm.”
  • Bill Waters: “$7.1 million for 8 years? Are you kidding? For Phaneuf? I’m sorry, this is an outrageous misrepresentation of his value. 4 years @ $4 million per is risky.” Maple Leafs HS: “”$4 mill is too much for Phaneuf.” Still concerns me to this day that @RealBillWatters once had a hand in running the Leafs.”
  • Hope Smoke: Bob McKenzie on TSN Radio: ”Buffalo will trade Ryan Miller at the 1st opportunity they get, he will not be re-signed”
  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger on TSN Radio: ”I’m sure the Oilers are interested in Reimer, but it’s way too early for the Leafs to consider moving him” … ”if the Leafs were even interested in moving Reimer to Edm or Cgy it would be for a package that is staggering” …  “I stand by the fact that the Leafs would not move Reimer for Yakupov”
  • Hope Smoke: Darren Dreger on TSN Radio: ”Regier identified a key roster player from Toronto and offered Vanek, but it wasn’t the right fit for the Leafs”
  • Jonathan Willis: Willis wonders if there is a trade for the Oilers to be made with a team like the Flyers, a “shake things up” type of trade.

If that is true, that Regier asked the TML for a current forward (in a package), it could only be JVR or Kadri, no?

I wouldn’t trade Reimer for Yakupov either. Reimer is the real deal. I find it funny how people still view the Leafs as a bad team even though they were a playoff team last year and sit atop the East right now. Are they a Cup contender? Not yet but they’re certainly on their way and their goaltending is a huge reason for this. Edmonton have a ton of highly skilled young forwards but no defense and no goaltending. If the Oilers stepped up and traded for James Reimer they would be a vastly improved team. Isn’t that a GMs job? It’s also worth noting that James Reimer is only 2 years older than Jordan Eberle and 2 years younger than Devon Dubnyk. As a Leaf fan I want to keep him.

Agree with what you have said, however, dont forget that Yakupov is a #1 Overall Draft Pick. Far more valuable than people are giving him credit for. I would trade Reimer for him in a heartbeat.

Toronto needs a #1 center or a top two defenseman. I cannot see Nonis moving a piece like Reimer for a winger like Yakupov. Toronto has depth at the postion with the likes of kessel, lupol, jvr, kulimen, clarkson and even raymond capable of filling those spots in the lineup.

Agree. I dont think Yak is a fit for Toronto’s Roster or for the Coach. But he is certainly more valuable than Reimer. If you were to try to trade Reimer, there are a small handful of teams interested. Yakapov is a player than every team would be interested in. I just dont buy any of this talk that EMD would trade Yakapov for Reimer.

Trade Phaneuf 100% the guy is gonna want 7 mill+ for what exactly 1 playoff appearance and a -6 yearly output? Toronto doesnt need the highest paid pylon in the NHL, hes at best a 2nd line defense man and shouldn’t be making more than 4 mill a year. Trading Reimer doesnt make sense the guys worked hard and improved alot also you dont know what your getting in Berneir yet and having a good 1-2 goalie tandum goes a long way.

Dion is +10 and among the League Leaders.

  8. #8 by Rob at October 30th, 2013

LMFAO what the like 13 games theyve played this year, ya cause thats always been the benchmark of a league leader.

    2009-2010(with leafs) -2
    2010-2011 -2
    2011-2012 -10
    2012-2013 -4

    Oh before i forget

2012-2013 playoffs -6 first round knockout, games 7 on ice for every single boston bruins goal.

  10. #10 by Dave at October 30th, 2013

    Hey Rob,

No he wasn’t on the ice for every goal. You just made that up.

Also plays more than a third of a game against the other teams to players. You expect him to have the best plus-minus? You’re silly.

no thanks for yak for reimer.. reimer is gonna help toronto make deep playoff runs this year and next… after next season, maybe we can part with him, but there is nothing better than having this tandem giving us a shot to win every night. toronto isn’t one of these teams, whose second goalie puts winnable games in question — and we need to keep it that way for now…

yak is not a fit for toronto… his attitude sucks, he is immature and doesnt know how to win… just concerned with those brief moments when he scores….

  12. #12 by Kurt at October 30th, 2013

Jeff, you say Yakupov is a far more valuable piece than Reimer? I’m sorry, which player is winning his team more games? So what does Edmonton need? More scoring or better goaltending? I also laugh when people say he was a 1st rd or 1st overall pick. Who cares where you were drafted. Would you rather Jamie Benn, 5th rd pick or Nail Yakupov, 1st rd pick?

  13. #13 by Mark at October 30th, 2013

If Reimer for Yakupov is available do you not do it in a heartbeat? Add likes of Lilies and Gunnarson and take Dybnuk in return?
Then swap Yakupov, Gardiner and a 1st Round pick this year for Shea Weber? Nashville is rebuilding and everyone wins this trade.

  14. #14 by Tomski at October 31st, 2013

So Mark you’re basically asking the Leafs to give up Reimer, Liles, Gunnarson, Gardiner and a 1st rd pick for Shea Weber? Don’t think that is a win for them at all.

  15. #15 by Jeff at October 31st, 2013

I would do that in a heart beat. Weber is an MVP type player.

  16. #16 by Tomski at October 31st, 2013

Agree with you that Weber is an MVP – i would probably do it if we dropped Gunnarson out of the deal – he’s so under-rated and cost effective, with a contract like Weber’s we would need more of those haha =P
