Afternoon Hits: Hybrid Icing, Kassian, Weise, Clarkson, Scott, Morrow, MacIntyre, Blues and Sabres

  • Gord Miller: Hybrid icing could be longshot for this year. NHL vote will be close and NHLPA approval is not a guarantee either.
  • Ben Kuzma: Canucks Zack Kassian stated his case on a 10-minute phone call this morning. He, nor Dale Weise, have any idea what is coming down.
  • James Mirtle: The Maple Leafs haven’t heard from the league regarding David Clarkson yet.
  • James Mirtle: Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle: ”We are still not over the cap. It’s tight… You have to adjust on the fly. You have to have Plan A, B, C and D.”
  • Mike Harrington: Sabres John Scott: ”I’d be pissed off if someone went after my star guy too. It’s one of those things their coach didn’t have to put Kessel out w/me.”
  • Jeremy Rutherford: The Blues have signed Brenden Morrow to a one-year, $1.5 million deal.
  • Jeremy Rutherford: Blues bring in Morrow as a fourth line player who can move up to the third line at times.
  • Ryan Rishaug: The Oilers have claimed Steve MacIntyre off waivers. Dan Murphy: Canucks Zack Kassian on the Oilers picking up MacIntyre: ”Perfect. I don’t think he can skate, that’s the last thing on our mind.”
  • Lou Korac: Blues GM Doug Armstong said they currently have 15 NHL forwards and will only carry 14. Will go down the wire for the last cut.
  • John Vogl: The Sabres currently have nine defenseman in camp and they might keep eight: Ehrhoff, McBain, Myers, Pysyk, Ristolainen, Sulzer, Tallinder, Weber and Zadorov.
