NHL Video: Should Justin Abdelkader be suspended for his hit on Toni Lydman?

Bob McKenzie: Red Wings Justin Abdelkader will have a hearing this afternoon.

Should Abdelkader get suspended for his hit on Ducks defenseman Toni Lydman? How many games SHOULD he get? How many game WILL he get?

Based on comparison to the Gryba hit, which was 2 games, this one at least should be 3, righteous would be rest of the series (minimum).
However one can never know how Shanahan’s past connections and inconsistency in his decisions will factor in here.

It should be 3-5 games, I vote 5 since the Wings fans continued to chant bullshit on such a blatantly dirty hit. Knowing Shanahan, it will be a $1500 fine.

It was a clean hit. No suspension needed. Let’s continue this duck hunt.

Clean hit. Abdelkader was Gliding for 10-15ft before the hit , did not leave his feet until after contact. Shoulder to shoulder initial contact. Clean hit

There is a difference between initial and principal.

Abdelkader barely touches Lydman’s shoulder (if ever), the main contact is clearly the head and it is even more clear his feet are off the ice at that point.

I think Red Wings fans rather tend to be classy than not, but the crowd was just classless. As are you Duck hunting.

    I can’t even hear you.

The original call was a clean hit. The Wings are always cheated in the Playoffs (Especially the year the Penguins beat the Wings). So what else is new right? I just hope Shanahan remembers wo he used to play for and remember that.

2 Game suspension? Well looks like officials are going after the Red Wings in another post season. Surprise Surprise.

Wow, looks like some Wings fans commenting on this.. that replay pretty clearly shows he left his feet and caught him in the head with his shoulder.

Textbook head shot; Abdelkader skates all the way from the far circle, leads with his shoulder, launches himself upwards, and makes direct contact with Lydman’s dome. This is exactly the type of play the NHL is looking to eliminate.

And boy did Shanahan look broken up having to suspend one of his own…

He’ll be back tomorrow to ust up some more heads.
