NHL Rumors II: Maple Leafs roundup from yesterday

From twitter unless otherwise noted

  • Hockey Central: The Leafs were negotiating late for Roberto Luongo. In the end they decided it didn’t make sense.
  • Darren Dreger: There were multiple options in the Luongo to Leafs trade talk. The Canucks were looking for Ben Scrivens and multiple picks between 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm yesterday. “Canucks called at 2pm…made a trade offer, Tor declined. Van called at 2:30 with 2nd offer, Tor declined…3rd offer at 2:45pm…decline.”
  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Canucks lowered their demands in the last hour, but it wasn’t enough for the Leafs. The Canucks were looking to get Ben Scrivens and two 2nd round picks in their final offer for Luongo. There may not have been a team that “was even remotely interested in Luongo.” If the Canucks would have retained some of the salary, the Maple Leafs may have been more likely to make a deal for him. There will now be more competition on the goalie market this summer with Ryan Miller, Jonathan Bernier and maybe Mike Smith. Nonis and Gillis don’t get along.
  • TSN Radio: Dreger said that Luongo’s term doesn’t make sense to Leafs management or it’s board. Dreger added that the Leafs didn’t counter offer.
  • Ben Kuzma: Canucks GM Mike Gillis on Roberto Luongo: “We’ve been close a number of times. We were listening a lot and confident in getting something done.”
  • James Mirtle: GM Nonis said that if the Leafs brought in Miikka Kiprusoff, it was only to help James Reimer develop as a goalie.
  • Randy Sportak: Kiprusoff on why he didn’t want to accept trade to Maple Leafs: “I don’t think it’s the right thing to do for the Leafs if my heart is not 100% there.”
  • Mike Zeisberger: Nonis on pending UFA Tyler Bozak: “If both sides want to be here, it’s my experience that things will work out.”
  • Mark Masters: Maple Leafs GM Dave Nonis said they inquired about Ryan O’Byrne about 7-10 days ago, but thought the price tag was too high then. Will likely be paired with John-Michael Liles or Michael Kostka.
  • Mark Masters: Nonis added that they were close to trading for a depth center but ‘not really until late in the day.’
